Please don't be mislead the CAI is superior to the short ram due to the cars narrow improvment when sucking in warm air from the engine compartment. Racingbeat wanted to make a CAI but did not have enough time! Please read the following article from Racingbeat.com

Intake and Header

An intake duct utilizing a K&N cone filter was produced for the car, and it got close to production when Mazda discovered that, due to it's narrow range of operation, the engine management system could not tolerate drawing warm air from the engine compartment. It was not possible to design a filter system that drew truly cool air in the time available. This aside, obtaining measurable improvement with this type of intake was proving to be a challenge. This part is not available.

So go with a CAI

Read that last sentence again. They are saying the engine wasn't responding much to any type of intake. They also said the biggest restriction was the primary catalytic convertor, so once that is removed, the intakes may make more of a difference.

"measurable improvement was challenging" They also said they did not have the time needed for a CAI. This is much better than"the engine management system could not tolerate drawing warm air from the engine compartment". There is also much more info out there about the benfits of CAI's. This mod really helped the 3000-6000 RPM range from stock as far as all around drivability but is not worth the money unless you plan on doing other mods to the engine.

I agree, if you are not planning on making major modifications to your engine, just go with a short ram....it will save you some money, and will still produce approx..the same amount of power as a CAI (as far as mp5 is concerned)....

Now on my honda, the CAI made a bit more power highend than did my shortram...but AEM knows what they are doing. If they didn't find it beneficial to market a CAI intake for the MP5, well I am assuming it hasn't made much more power over a shortram.

But if you do your homework, and figure out to what extent you want to mod your car out to, you will be able to make an educated decision as to what better fits your needs.

Good luck!

Could be any number of reasons for AEM not marketing a CAI, performance margin, cost of R&D, cost of final product. My question is if Mazda found that "the engine management system could not tolerate drawing warm air from the engine compartment" you must have to do other mods to the short ram or ECU to get it to work properly

So if you use the CAI and then put on a high-flo cat converter, you should see better then normal improvements???
