I can't remember where I read this, but here goes.

The article was in reference to air intakes, it was mentioned that you can plug two hoses that circulate hot water to the throttle body for true cold air intake.

He mentioned that this is necessary for ultra cold weather areas so the butterfly won't freeze, therefore if you live in a warm climate area this mod would be possible.

I guess it makes sense, I checked out the hoses on my 99 1.6 LX and they do exist. They seem to share the input and output of the water hose for the air heater for the inside

What do you guys think? Possible?

Those hoses are there to heat up the intake manifold for better COLD weather starting. It helps the engine reach operating temp faster.

It is possible to do. Just figure out wich hose is in and which is return and pull them off of the intake mainfold and attach them together.

 

I removed the lines from mine and you can't tell a huge difference but you can tell when you engine is at full temp and you get on it! I took me about 5 minutes and about 20oz of water!! I removed one of the lines and re routed the other to connect to where the other line went!! I'll post some pics as soon as I get my flash card reader working again!!

 

Does this mean it's ok to do this?

I live in San Diego, Cali. The coldest it might ever get is 50F.

I will do the mod tonight, I'll post any gains or losses.

Look at your Throttle Body, below you will see two small rubber hoses with clamps that attach to the TB.

Follow the lines down and you'll see that they are teed off to the heater inlet and outlet for the inside heater.

As mentioned in this thread, remove one hose and the other just bridge it to the inlet and outlet metal hose tee. kinda like a U bend.

1.8 and 2.0 yeah right.

Did mine too.

It feels slightly better stuck in traffic at 90F.

I don't know if there is more HP but definitely more peace of mind, plus it's free.

A friend did it on a 5.0 mustang but took it one more step,he took a line from his windshield washer pump and ran it throught the TB and back to his washer bottle. He just hit the washer when he wanted extra cooling in the TB . and ice to the bottle for cold alcohol.

 

Thats not a bad idea I thought about running my fuel line though a 4"pvc tube about 8" long and put dry ice in it when I decieded to run someone! (every weekend, every day )

 

This is an interesting idea, but it has one major flaw....

The only time freon would be flowing through the TB would be when the air conditioning is on, so at best, you would negate the power loss of having the AC on....

 

Just my two cents but I doubt it would work. You wouldn't have enough surface area or temperature differential to make a significant change. The coolant heats up the TB well because of the large difference in temp and radiant heat.

this sort of thing has been discussed quite a bit on the supra board quite often, guys talking about moving the ac condenser inline with the intake. But like Orange Crush said, the compressor would likely rob all the gains plus some. It's too bad too, because I know on my bike at least, on cold mornings you can really feel the difference. And that is just a 10 degree dip in temp.

I was thinkin today about insulating the TB and pushing NOS or CO2 though it!! Kind of like the setup that they have for intercoolers but I don't think the TB could handle the pressure because they are not made for that!! Any thoughts??

 

I think if it handles the pressure of the cooling system it could handle pressurized C02...however to be honest this would be a rediculously expensive mod....actually if you just want it for racing heres what the pros do....lay a bag of ice on the TB before you run...costs about $0.79 and you'll get about 2-3 runs before it melts your ice...maybe more if you do this mod and arent running hot antifreeze thru it
