J-SPEC Intake for FS-DE
I am curious if anyone knows anyone who has the JDM FS-DE intake and how it performed? I would like to eventually build my motor to J-SPECs w/cams and pistons also.
The J-SPEC engine has the same HP as the Mazdaspeed version. This conversion would probably cost less than boosting also.
Anyway, your thought would be appreciated.

you need to do a LOT more research before buying parts. The intake isn't the reason why there is a 40hp bump in power.
You'll need cams, higher compression pistons, fully tuned EMS, vcts-less intake etc etc.
If you want a performance intake manifold that will give you a slight bump in power you need to find a 626 manifold with a single plane runner. They've been proven to be a good boost in power but a little sluggish down low.

The 626 intake manifold shows gains for high-boost turbo motors. It's not adviseable for NA motors.
In NA applications, the benefits of low and midrange power that the VICS system on the stock intake manifold yields vastly outweigh the tiny gain you might get at the top of the powerband using the single-runner intake manifold.
Not many people convert to FSZE because the critical element--the ECU--is so difficult to obtain.

There's a guy on the other forum who did JDM cams, pistons, and intake manifold--didn't get anywhere near 170 hp without that ECU. You might do ok with Microtech and a good tune, though.

When I say 170hp, I am talking about at the crank. They probably dyno'd it so that test is done at the wheels. That would be awsome if you could spend that little money and get 170whp, but I know it's not possible.
I guess that ECU is pretty impotant though huh. What if you got your ECU flashed for that setup or a dyno tune?

I know you're talking about crank hp. So am I.
You can't reflash your ECU to J-spec. But you can run a stand alone ECU. With a good tune you could probably get more power out of it than the FSZE had.

I'd do a search locally for people good with "megasquirt". I have 2 real big MS guys here in town and they swear to me they can program a MS to run any vehicle (except DISI) as good as OEM with a weeks worth of time.
I'm thinking about having them do a small MS box on the NA set-up I'm working on.

I am not familiar with the terminology so, what does "MS" and "DISI" stand for? Is "MS", MAZDASPEED? ALso. there is a shop in the St Louis area who does alot of work on Mazdas and he swears he can get good power for an FS although his specialty is rotaries.
