WELL, have tried both the ADVANCE AUTO aa6607 (PUROLATOR) and the PUROLATOR L14612 oil filter. Both worked JUST ABOUT PERFECT for having the oil lite go out immediate on a cold (4 or more hours cool down) start. I am NOT talking about the 2700 rpm or so "diesel" sound. I am talking about the pro,miata and in general all 4 cyl. mazda engine having a rod bearing rattle till the oil lite goes out (approx 1/2 to 1 sec ) after a cold start. SO WHY DOESN'T MAZDA USE PUROLATOR--ESPECIALLY SINCE PUROLATOR GOT A QUALITY AWARD FROM MAZDA -as I stated in my first post on this subject. I have 3 reasons of my own..1) corporate cheapness-getting the filter cheaper from tenneco (oem) or factory(tokoyo roki) 2) not enough people have bitch about it, or have no idea what I am talking about 3) Mazda hopes enough bearing damage occurs that the engines let loose after warranty.
This is NOT REALLY an engine design problem, but an oil filter design problem. Maybe if the filter was larger, some oil would remain, BUT with this small motorcycle filter( yes most motorcylces can use the v-6 filter) there is not much to drain and when it does it is empty. I know being small will take less time to fill, BUT IT SHOULD NOT EMPTY IN THE FIRST PLACE. BOTH MAZDA( FACTORY AND OEM ) CHAMP (WAL MART) DON'T CUT THE MUSTARD. Have not tried fram and not going to. IF YOU WANT TO STOP HEARING YOUR BEARING RATTLE ON COLD START UP-USE PUROLATOR OR DERIVITIVE.
PS. If you live near pep boys-a PROLINE PPL-14612 IS THE SAME FILTER AS A PUROLATOR.IT IS PEP BOYS HOUSE BRAND
I know I posted on this before, but I just wanted to update. I DON'T NEED ANYONE TO TELL ME ABOUT DOULE POST,DEAD SUBJECT ETC.

lol. Sounds like the post ***** have come after you before.

Purolator filters are good, and Wix filters work really well too.
Tip: Buy one for a Mazda V6. There's only one Mazda V6 oil filter, so don't worry about buying the wrong size. Remember, the V6 filter is bigger, so you'll have to add a bit more oil.

THANKS EGGYNATEY for the reply. The stock purolator/devivitive that I have been talking about is actually TALLER than the oem dealer filter. SO on that assumption, the v-6 purolator versions should be taller than the v-6 oem, so you would have the LARGEST VERSION of the filter in a V-6 PUROLATOR . I know the v6 puro is larger than the stock puro-I stood them side by side. I guess if you want the LARGEST, go with the puro. Or the next time you buy a v-6 wix, see how the size compares with a v-6 puro. MAYBE the real largest is the wix. I may tried the v-6 puro next time.
PS- NOT that a filter cost much relative to other parts and you should't be cheap in this area BUT in this post I didn't mention the BARGIN a purolator -and especially its counterparts are.
The advance aa 6607 is only $2.48 for the "stock" version. The v-6 version in the advance I think did not come up or had a wrong #-need to ck. with parts counter. The puro stock # is L 14612 and v-6 is L 14610. Prices vary depending on store or sales BUt a few time a years puro has a promotion and stores sell the puro for 2 for $ 5.00. PURO did a stock # change and some stores still have the old #---L14622 for stock and L 14620 for v-6. I f you find them they are going real cheap to close out old stock-basically same filter and different numbers. FINALLY ( and not to soon) if you live near a pep boys the PROLINE PPL 14612 (STOCK) can be had for $3.49. Don't know if a proline come in v-6, but i guess it would since pep boys actually uses the purolator numbers-nothing being hid here. Save a little here and pays for OPEC to keep fuel in the car. LOL- I got BLASTED right out of the gate for a double post. HAPPY MOTORING

I've used the Purolator L14612 since the first or second oil change. The oil change before last, I had a disabled car in my garage so I took it to a shop for the oil change. When I changed the oil last weekend, I was shocked to see the tiny filter, since it had been so long since I've used the stock size. Prior to last weekend's oil change, I did notice the bearing rattle at start-up and an overall rough sounding engine. I'm due fo r a plug change, so I wrote it off to that and wasn't too concerned, since I can change plugs in <5 minutes. As soon as I finished changing the oil and filter, I noticed a big difference in engine noise. I too, would recommend the longer filter for everyone.
