lean code 0171

i got an engine light code for "lean fuel system" 0171 from autozone. i cound't figer out why this would happen, as the car its bone stock. while i was under the hood i discover a ripped vaccum hose. do you think this vacuum leak could throw such a code. apart from the code the car has a rought idle and misfire which is due to the leak. if any one has a stock vacuum hose for 99 1.6 id be happy to buy it from u.

The damaged vacuum hose will definitely cause you to throw a code. It will also cause a lean condition (hence the code). If you ignore it for a long time, you can do damage to the engine. You can buy generic vacuum hose by the foot at the auto parts store. Unless you're replacing a formed hose with a tight curve in it, I can't imagine why plain vacuum hose wouldn't work.

we just covered this a few weeks ago.

1.6's are know for having MAF's go bad...and a bad MAF can cause you to throw this code

Dude, that's what duct tape is for, sealing up air leaks in ducts!

But seriously, it's so TRASHY. Duct tape has no business under the hood of any automobile except as a stopgap solution to get you there until the replacement part you just ordered comes in.

Hell ill occasionally use scotch tape untill the dealer can get in new parts. Takes a week for anything around here. JUst fix the leak and go to the dealer.

For the hose you could probubly go to the nesrest homedeopt and pick up some cool clear vinal tubing. IT would work well and give you alittle bling bling.

The MAF would also cause the problem you describe. If it ends up being the MAF, Mazda had a recall on my 2000 1.6L where they changed it at no cost if the car had less than (I think) 7 yrs/70K miles. If you are out of warranty, you can change the MAF yourself...it is right on top on the air intake beween the airfilter and throttle body.
