Lost Power

Lost Power
This weekend I nstalled a reactive intake (shorty). After that things felt good power wise. The engine had a bit of a different sound than it did with all the stock intake crap on. Then I had bought a muffler to install. I went to my local muffler shop and had it put on. They did a damn good job with installing it. I had them do an "axle back" install. When we started it up for the first time is sounded good. When I left the place it kinda seemed as if it had less power than it should have. So I went back and had them look at it. The guy said if I take the resonator out it will sound much better, and preform better. Right now it sounds like just an up graded stock muffler, unless I am in the gas. It looks great. Someone told me I need to disconect the Negtive on the Batt. to let the computer re-cal to the new stuff added on. Maybe this is the problem. Thanks for the help

Here's a couple things that I'm thinking...
1. It could be the intake. I'm not sure exactly how short the intake you installed is, but if you just hung a filter right next to your engine, it's quite possible you lost power. With the greatly decreased intake length and the fact that it's sucking hot air right off the engine, that could be your problem. It's been dyno-tested to reduce hp on Probes.
2. By increasing the size of your piping, both intake and exhaust, you may have sacrificed a bit of low-end torque for the high-end hp. Since we "feel" torque more than hp, it's quite possible that your car feels like it's not picking up as well as it used to, when, in fact, it's quicker than before.
3. Resetting your ECU may help as well. I'm not as sure about the Proteges, but Probes always take a day or so to adjust to the new airflow levels. So you may want to try that... it couldn't hurt.

The intake goes into the conner of my engine bay, away from the heat. Before I put the muffler on I had good power with just the intake. I am going to try resetting the ecu. Maybe this will cure the problem.

Ok I just got back from the muffler shop. I have an appt. set for 2pm to have a custom catback added to the axle back I have already. He is going to do it for $55. Not bad, meineke wants about 75 or more. I am using 2.25 pipes. That is what he suggested also. The muffler is dagger II, I don't know who makes it. I bought it off of E-bay, from Megan Racing. It has a 2.25 in 4.5 out. I have tried to include pictures but its not working.

That looks fine. Going back to my original post, I'd say you're probably experiencing #2 rather than #1. If you've reset the ECU, I'd recommend you give it a couple days. This is assuming you have the intake installed properly, with all sensors hooked up correctly.
The high-flow cat would probably help HP a bit, but, once again, that's gonna sacrifice a bit of low-end torque for high-end hp.

Very true. Often high-flow cats don't flow much better than stock on low-hp cars (like ours). If I really wanted to stay legal and I had a Viper, then I might do it. However, on my Probe, I just said screw legality and got myself a test pipe. I dunno if it added any more hp than a high-flow cat would have, but it was a lot cheaper, and it doesn't leave any room for doubt.

Here is another thought. Look at my intake. The intake sits right on the radiator hose. Is that bad? After the car runs the pipe is nice and warm. I am a metal smith so I have access to tools and materials to make some kind of heat shield. I think I am going to get rid of it, and get the injen CAI.

I had the same problem with the position of my intake ( rubbing on the upper rad hose ) just have to adjust the mounting bracket so you find a happy medium so you are not touching the rad hose or hitting your master cylinder under torque conditions. It can take a while and it is a pain to find that "sweet spot"

First of all I would like to say thank for the help, and info. My problem is fixed. I had the muffler shop remove the resnator. I made my low end and high end a hell of a lot better. I also reset my ecu, don't know how much of an effect it had. I will include pics so you and see the final product. As for the intake, I am working on that issue now. Thanks again
Here is the part I had remover to add power.
Here is a shot of the muffler
and here is my intake.
