Mazda Sport Exhaust
Does anyone actually have the exhaust from mazdastuff.com?
I may be ordering it just so I have something better for the showss until someone else comes up with something better. And don't say get the Bosal because I won't. I will wait til Racing beat is shipping or Greddy or someone else makes one. Plus our exhaust is already stainless so I dont plan on replacing it all, just the axle back untill I actually have the engine goodies to warrant an extra $500 for exhaust.
Thanks

that is great but I have seen the pics of it and think it is ricey. I will wait until a higher end manufacturer comes out with something. plus on a NA 4 cyl, there is no need for a true catback.

It depends on what your idea of "need" is...a true tuned cat-back will give you some gains in the powerband on a NA car...most of the oem systems are restrictive and more power can be acheived by replacing them with a properly tuned aftermarket setup. If all you want to do is look sporty...then go for the muffler...but if you end up adding more modifications such as cams, intake, n20,boost,etc...an aftermarket cat-back will add to the effectiveness of such upgrades. Just my .02

well since the p5 barely revs that hight it won't matter. I am saying it based one what Greddy back me up on. All i have is an intake and righht now there is not need for a full cat back. When i get ready to do cams, or turbo in a year or so then I will get a greddy or something that is like that. I have a friend that owns a high end tuner shop in Chicago and he will be the 1st to tell someone that unless they are doing a lot of internals or boosting then they should go axleback instead of cat back where they will be loosing a good portion of low end perfomance, which is important for a daily driver, I don't race mine so I don't need to worry about being near redline.

I'm thinking about getting the Mazda sport muffler. I'm doing it only for the looks and maybe a slightly deeper sound. IMHO if your keeping the car stock otherwise it doesn't make much sense to spend another $200 for a catback that may add a few hp. I don't think there will be any SOTP difference.

What shop? I live in the Chicago area would like to find a decent shop for the few things I don't have the tools to install myself.

The smaller exhaust makes more torque idea is a fallacy. I've read test after test of aftermarket exhausts on everything from small 4 cylinder cars to 10 cylinder Vipers and the tests always say one thing. Stock is restrictive. No matter the state of tuning, no matter what anecdotal evidence may suggest. The dyno don't lie. In every test I've seen the dyno results show a gain all the way through the rpm band with a size increase in exhaust. The torque doesn't drop off until the exhaust is huge. If you change from the stock system to even a 2.25" system, you will notice an increase in power and fuel mileage and no loss of torque. Quite the opposite. The torque increase on a 2.0L will be in the 4-5 lb range at the high end, and 6-7 in the mid range. Hardly the loss that some people claim.
The myth has always been that fuel injection needs some back pressure to work properly. That was only true of the early electronic systems because of them being unable to have sensors that would react fast enough. We are well past that now. In the last 3 years every major tuner has said the same thing. Bigger is better (within reason). You don't need a 4 inch exhaust on a normally aspirated 1.6L but an increase from stock always results in an increase in power. A 2.5 inch would work fine on a 2.0 Protege. Even bigger for a turbo or mechanical supercharger. The cams are small enough that there is no danger of overscavenging.

Did some checking. Most tuners are recommending the 2.25" exhaust for normally aspirated up to about 200 HP, and the the 2.5 for forced induction applications. If you get really crazy (400 hp or so) you will probably be looking at 3 inch. Keep in mind that the larger the pipe diameter, the more noise will get through it also.

lol, need to know what you want before you decide where to get it. i was thinkin about the bosal, but was really wondering if there is a site that just has a compilation of different systems that would fit a protege. if i plan on turbocharging, adding ingen intake and filter, and *possibly* an engine swap in the not so near future (from the 1.6 to a v6 2.2) what size/brand would you recommend sir nuke??
