Usually cat back systems don't include a performance cat. And i agree you won't get much power at all from just a cat back. just MHO.

I believe the correct term for this exhaust would be a Rear Section or Cat Back. Anything with the Cats would be a Mid section, down pipe, X or H pipe depending on the vehicle.

"Cat back" is exactly that. From the catalytic converter back. It does not involve the cat. You are right Vivid... but the cat is included in the down pipe or H pipe. Like off-road H pipes that have no cats.... The cat is in this pipe that connects to the headers...

the hip bone connects to the thigh bone.....
The Header bone connects to down pipe bone (with cat) or H-pipe on a V8 mustang for example- the silencer tube or pipe bone connects to the the muffler bone.

hahaha.....

i just got one question, should i feel wierd for having that song stuck in my head now?!?!?

and yes, you two are both correct, just always a hope that no one would EVER spend near $500 just for catback and an exhaust. that would be

I know what you mean man!

I get songs like that stuck in my head all day long!

People get the wrong idea about exhausts and the power they add, yep if you are running a car with a ton of mods, it will help..otherwise... not really too much maybe 1-2hp?

the claims are always BS, like you are gonna get 20hp putting on a catback or a K&N filter!

Reminds me of another song... "Blinded by the light...wrapped up like a" I'll stop

Check out http://www.bbtriflo.com/ then. They don't make anything for Mazda, but the Mustang Catback I looked into was something like $800..rather expensive for the 3 to 5 hp gain but its all in the looks.

In another post I recently had, I referenced an artice in Grassroots Motorsports where they Dyno tested 8 different cat-back exhausts on a Jetta. In the BEST of circumstances, they got 5.9hp at the wheels, and in the worst they got 1.5. This is without replacing or altering the cat. 5.9hp at the wheels is a difference you can feel, expecially when your basline #'s are so low. With our double cat setup, I'd speculate that eliminating the secondary cat and adding a new high flow pipe and muffler from there back would produce even better results than were gotten from that Jetta. Granted, it still won't be smoking any Vette's, but every little bit helps on our cars.

well the problem there is emissions. removing a cat is not only illegal (in the US, don't know about anywhere else) but loud as crap. Now, i'm not against the loud part, but I seriously doubt we'd pass emissions with a removed cat. but who knows, i'm not gonna try.

HubbMP5 you are correct though, just to make that clear. Removing the cat increases the air flow sooooooo much better. Some friends of mine removed theirs on their trucks and said it was sooo loud, so they went driving down a major highway just lovin the noise. Unfortunately they put them back, but for legal reasons.

I replaced the factory H pipe on my 98 mustang GT which had 2 pre-cats & 4 main cats. If your doing the math that’s 3 very large air restrictive devices per side with a Bassani high flow X pipe only 1 cat per side. It made a pretty good difference. I had the option to do a X or H pipe without the cats, but im my case you’d have to buy crap to fake out the O2 sensors & I didn’t want all that added noise.

Vivid..

I know what you mean. I had a 91 LX with and off-road H pipe and turn downs... loud as crap!, that made a big power difference... i also had a GT40 crate motor with ton of other mods... I love my protege, but miss that power, but I sure don't miss the weekly work that need to be done on that mustang and also the 15 miles per gallon!

I'm not talking about removing BOTH that cats, just the secondary. Our cars have 2 cats so that they can meet ULEV standards. If you're like me and live in a county where they do not perform emissions testing, then thats not a concern. I don't think it'll be too loud with one cat removed- but I'll find out for sure in a couple months.

hehe, let us know how it feels without the cat, plus let us know how is sounds. I'm surprised to think that having only one cat would still put us in ULEV. heck, i'm surprised we're ULEV WITH 2 cats. Cars only have to make LEV to pass emissions in the US. In Texas, you fail an inspection and can get a big fine for not passing LEV. If removing one of our cats keeps us in LEV...

THAT BABY IS GOOONE......

let me know.

Correct me if i'm wrong - just some info i've gotten from a VW forum:

They were talking about the emissions laws and the readers digest version is that in cali you need the 2 cats to pass emissions laws, everywhere else you only need the main one to be legal... is that right?

I don't know what the laws are up here in redneck alberta, but from the amount of monster trucks and POS cars running around with what basically sounds like no muffler, i'm guessin they're not too strict...

Anyone want to expand on/correct my flawed thinking?

I believe you are correct. I've heard that cali is pretty strict on their emission laws, but i'm not for sure. And as far as one cat doin the job, I don't know for sure. I'm gonna see if I can get an honest answer from anyone i know.
