Mazdaspeed Protege Ecu question

Does anybody have any information on the ecu coming out on the the new turbo Protege? Did they use a stock one or are the fuel and timing maps different from the ecu on the n/a 2.0?

Excellent question, I've been wondering myself. Don't know yet, but since the turbo kit will be port installed in the States, it might be a low enough boost application to use the stock ECU.

Hmmm

Well I hope they do somthin to the ECU. Cause I don' think many people are going to be happy wit the stock boost setting. And if they don't get a A/F Meter they'll lean right into meltdown. Or hit the fuel cut and wonder "what wrong?" I could be wrong, but from my experiance first time turbo owners think "just turn up the boost to go faster" I am deffinately interested in upgrading my ECU but don't want to spend to much money.

Traveler has some excellent info on the stock ECU

Our engines run very rich A/F ratio at WOT. He says that this would be very good for a turbo setup to about 7-8psi. I know very little about turbo tweaking so you might want to send him a message

Hey, I'm just the messenger on this one. The A/F on mine when we dynoed it was 10.1 from about 4000 on up. The techs that dynoed it said (from experience) that it would probably take a power adder with just a little tweaking to fine tune it with a Unichip. They were talking 5-7 psi supercharged, 6-8 psi turbo. Since there are a couple places that are working on kits right now that are expecting the same boost levels, I'm keeping in touch to see what they end up doing with fuel management. If it needs more, they were just going to add an FMU to richen it slightly. If it doesn't need any, then outstanding! We won't need to tweak it to go boosted.

We'll probably learn a lot from what Mazda does with the Mazdaspeed 3. Seeing that the turbo will be a port installed option, I'm not sure if they could do anything with the ECU in advance. Although the LSD and larger axles would probably be installed on the assembly line in Japan. The ECU was slightly different on the MP3 also.

Yea I'm looking forward to see what happens. But I find it hard to believe that our stock ecu would give enofe fuel via the stock fuel system. I guess they could keep the stock ECU if they added a little more pressure. My old car was a AWD Talon TSi and I increased the the boost by 7psi over stock and was able to avoid boost cut by doing some minor tweekin. But then again that car came wit turbo. I dunno but I'll deffinately have my eye on the new turbo Pro.

I don’t think the ECU is cost prohibitive in this case. I mean, what’s the difference between the two. Just some control code and circuitry. The manufacturers just consider them highly proprietary, so they seem that way to tuners. But if they share the circuit design and coding details with a developer like Mazdaspeed, it’s a wash. It could very easilly be done on shore. If I only had those details…

They'll just reflash the ECU program with the new fuel curve needed for their turbo setup. Easy for them since they designed the ECU in the first place. Cost about $0 and will take them 5 minutes.

As long as the Callaway turbo system doesn't exceed the physical limitations of the stock fuel pump or fuel injectors, the stock ECU could be programmed to handle the system. The question is, can the stock fuel system handle the turbo, and what is going to be used to control it? We won't know until we get more information about the MazdaSpeed 3. It's another hurry up and wait deal.

From my experience my stock fuel system is more than enough for my 5 psi non-intercooled system. I run way rich all the time when in boost. I have run it up to 8 psi with no problems. SO yes the stock fuel system in the 3rd gens can handle it easy.

Hey Creig

How much did it cost for your turbo setup and how long have you had it? Thanks that makes me feel better about using NOS. But I'm not going with ZEX I will use Nos. Any advice about what Ignition i should use and should I retard the timeing?

I ran a 60 shot for a while on teh stock ignition and never had a problem. I've had the turbo on for about 2 months now with no problem. If you want to retard the ignition on the DIS system you need to get the MSD DIS-2 ignition unit just the retard box won't work on the new Proteges
