mods on mazdaspeed protege

what are the major differences between an 02' protege and a mazdaspeed protege besides the turbo and what turbo system does it use and last can all these mods done to the new mazdaspeed pro be done to the 02' pro and if it is possible how much would it cost (estimate) to do this??? just curious!!!

The Mazdaspeed can sort of be refered to as a MP3 with a turbo and different paint.

They actually only share a few "modded parts", but they were tuned similarly suspension wise.

Here are some of the upgrades, -turbo:

Conical ring, torque sensing LSD
17" Racing Hart wheels with 215/45-17 Brigdstone Potenza RE040 tires
Slightly larger E-spec 4 wheels disc brakes
Thicker swaybars than stock, not sure if bigger than MP3
stiffer Tokico struts (stiffer than MP3s's for added weight), valved by racing beat
Racing Beat springs, spring rates achieved for stiffer struts
Sparco shift ****
Sparco pedals
shortened shifter
different apolstry with colored stitching
Leather wrapped Nardi steering wheel, with colored stitching
A ton of stereo upgrades that I am not going to get into (do a search)
Anyone please add to this if I missed something, which i probably did.

As for the turbo... The system is being installed on NA MSD's by Callaway Cars. It is a fairly tame kit, using a Garret T-25 turbo and European protege intercooler (from the diesal protege over there), boosting to about 6 psi. The end resul is around 170hp at the crank.

If you would do all these mods to your stock pro. It would probably be upwards of $10,000. Not very cost effective. that is considering dealer prices for the parts. I don't even think you could get the turbo kit through a dealership, or the LSD.

Luckily you do have some options to beat those prices. I have not seen prices on Callaways kit alone, but run a search on BEGI or FM Protege turbo, and Tripoint engineering. They are building turbos now..

from Mazda's website, I believe the the Mazdaspeed Protege's sway bar are indeed thicker than the MP3's. 27mm front AND rear sway bars (for comparison, MP3's are only 25mm front and 20mm rear)

on top of all the stuff that' already listed, the MSP also comes with ABS w/ EBD standard, which the MP3 did not have. the ABS by itself is a $1000 upgrade.

A LOT of stuff for $20k sticker. Let's just hope dealers don't put like a $3000 premium over it like they did with the Minis and the new Z car...

oh, and Sport Compact Car dyno'd a MSP to 150whp and 155 ft/lb wheel torque. Can you say UNDERRATED crank power

Its been stated by Mazda that a Kit will NOT be offered through dealers for general sale to the public...in fact the only to obtain parts that are specific to the mazdaspeed Pro would be with proof of ownership of one of the cars.

Yeah Yeah, they say that now, but look at the mp3 paint scheme for example, that was supposed to be an exclusive color and now it's on the mp5.

But if it's true, that's pretty cheap, mazda could probably get lots of money off of selling those parts. Soon enough they'll get greedy and not care about the exclusive-ness anymore, last time I checked mazda was only in this game to make money. Oh well....thanks for crashing my dreams sir nuke

I'm glad that in Canada it's against the law to sell new cars above the sticker price.

I think it could be a problem with Callaways contract, or resources to build enough kits for dealerships to sell. I don't know for sure though just a thought
