I hit my rev limiter several times a day... However, the rev limiter in the 1.8L cuts in at 6,450rpm (way too early for the 1.8L). I have also seen several dyno's in this forum of the 2.0L from both 2001 and 2002 sedans and 2002 Protege5's where you can see the rev limiter kicking in at 6,450rpm. I have seen one dyno of a 2001 ES sedan where the rev limiter kicks in at 6,800rpm. However, on that dyno you can see where power drops off substantially right after 6,450rpm... which tells me it's rev limiter probably cut in there too. However, that dyno just looks suspicious because the power and torque curves look like a frequency wave rather than a smooth curve.

I agree with njaremka. The rev limiter is definetly above 6500 RPM, somewhere near 7000.

That just doesn't make any sense right there. When you hit the rev limiter the engine cuts fuel, quick and harsh. You may get a couple of RPM more with the sheer inertia of the engine accelerating but after that its all down hill. What you are noticing on the ES is a natural characteristic of the engine. When you hit a rev limiter you DO NOT go higher than the RPM it is set at. Thats the whole point of a rev limiter, to protect your mindless *** from blowing the engine by exceeding its redline by too far.

i will just add my experience from driving that the limiter is past 6500. first time i hit the limiter unknowingly was a scary feeling. I don't think it's all the great to hit your rev limiter often.

Yeah well it was funny. One time I had this ricer friend with an Intergara, and he thgouth he was real cool. He was pulling out of this local stereo shop that we all hung out at, and it was customary fro people to peel out as they lef the parking lot. Well my ricer friend in his uber leet integra had a ckuthc that was fgoing out. Well when it was his turn to leave one day, of course we all expected him to burn some rubber. So fo course he was willing to obligie. Well his cluthc was slipping like a muthafucker, so as he was trying to peel out, his cluthch was just slipping, and he just sat there for like 30 seconds bouncing off the rev limiter thinkg it was the ****. OK sorry for that long almost irrelvant post (but it did have relevance to the rev limiter), word SLIP CLUTHC KICKS ***!!!!!

It amazes me that no one has picked up on the fact that apparently the computer can be reprogrammed while still in the car... Some one close with mazda should try to get ahold of the communication specs. If you can get the code out of the ECU, then it would be easy to pull it out of a MP3 and put it back into a Protege5.

Nope... not the same retard. He came to the California Protege Meet a few weeks ago and brought so many Mazda banners, pennant flags, cameras, clocks, stickers, and other goodies that he could barely get the trunk closed. He brought one of Mazda's MP3 press cars. We actually had a discussion there regarding higher octane fuels because one of the Protege5's that came was running 104 octane! That's the second time I heard that the regular 2.0L's do not have a knock sensor... as he explained to the guy that running anything higher than 87 octane in a non-MP3 Protege is a huge waste of money.

this whole ecu thing is in he process of being solved b mazcare. mazmart down here has 3 MP3's in their "salvage" yard and mazcare from what i was told is gonna try picking one up and seeing what they can do. i will talk to sunbelt monday and see what they have to say. i would think that they would be able to burn ECU's but maybe not. is our ECU an e-prom by chance or am i in a different country

The 2.0L has the rev limiter set to around 6800rpm. When you have the needle around there, it's close enough to "7" that you think it's 7000rpm. You forgot one thing. Stock tachs are INACCURATE.
The stock tach is very inaccurate especially at higher RPM's. I installed a autometer pro-comp tach in mine and when the stock tach hits 6500 rpm my good tach is reading right around 6100. SO 400 rpm variance. but what you see on teh stock tach is what your computer is reading as the signal goes from the signal wire to the ECU to the tach. The wiring schem. in the protege is very phucked up reminds me of the british cars i work on. Anyways to say the least do not trust your stock tach. Its liek the autometer ads says....pistons, header, intake, exhaust, system.....and stock gauges WTF

that's YOUR tach that reads that far off. and just becauser there is a longer wire path to the tach, doesn't mean that's why it's off. there is a mark on the outer edge that is lined up with the needle when it is installed. that mark is quite wide and allows for some variation. i personally think that my tach is pretty close to where it is supposed to read. i did some calculations to compare road speed with tach reading, and my gauge follow those calcs pretty close. there is some tolerance in that, but mine is still close.
