No. 2 engine mount... Good swap info!
I just installed a new No. 2 engine mount in my car, and I have a few notes to share...
My car recently began vibrating strongly at idle and shuddering hard when I suddenly lifted off the gas in lower gears. The car also became harder to shift smoothly. I traced it to a broken No. 2 engine mount (the one under the front of the engine, behind the radiator). Several other people on this board have broken this mount, and it seems to be the wimpiest one on the car, but fortunately it is also the 2nd easiest one to replace. A few notes...
1) Replacing the mount made it MUCH easier to drive the car smoothly. Although it does not entirely eliminate the infamous drivetrain "rubber band" problem- the shudder when you suddenly change throttle position in 1st and 2nd gears- it DOES inprove the problem. If your car shudders really hard, or it seems to have gotten worse, it's worth checking the No. 2 mount.
2) Good info for owners of 99 Proteges... although all G3 Proteges use a similar No. 2 mount, the parts number has changed twice, and the latest part is SIGNIFICANTLY beefier than the old one that was originally installed in my car (according to the VIN table in the parts catalog, I had the original part number). The center of my old mount was supported by 3 wimpy-looking thin rubber sheets that had completely torn away, but the new mount has two thick rubber bars that look MUCH harder to break. It's worth replacing if you like driving hard.
3) Good Swap Info: If you're swapping your engine, the old No. 2 mount will fit the new engine; however, if your car (or the engine donor) has a VIN number lower than JM1BJ22###158189, it's a good idea to toss the old, wimpy mount and use the updated, stronger mount instead. The new part number is B25D-39-050C.
Hey Edwin... good FAQ info here. Good luck, everyone!
