Thumbs down please read...clutch chatter back after fix

Now I'm getting a little bit peaved here. My clutch chatter has come back. Initially I thought that it was my imagination as it was verry slight, but now it's the same as it was before I had it fixed.

I had the clutch chatter fixed at about 30,000 km. I know have about 44,000 km.

The parts replaced were listed as:

FS06-16-460 DISC,CLUTC
FS05-16-410A COVER,CLU
G560-16-510B CLUTCH COLL
F801-11-303 BEARING
5555-TM-001R M/TRAN OIL.

if you had yours fixed by the dealer, can you please check your repair invoice to see if the parts match mine. If not what is different.

Now I read on this board that the TSB has the Flywheel listed as an item to change as well. It does not appear that my flywheel was changed.

Could the flywheel cause the chattering to come back??
Could it be something else broken or screwed up that can cause this???

There seems to be some consensus that the flywheel is a major part of the problem. When I had my clutch done, they did not replace the flywheel either, and I am starting to get occassional chatter (although not as bad as before). I will be taking the TSB parts list in when I feel it is time to get the problem looked at again. If I was you, I would definitely take the TSB from Edwin's FAQ along and discuss the issue with your dealer.

what is chatter? is it like clutch judder or clutch shudder where it shakes the car abruptly while the pressure plate tries to engage the flywheel starting from a standstill?

Bingo. You hit the nail on the head.

BTW most of the info I've read indicates that the clutch chatter experienced by late-model Mazdas is caused by improperly manufactured flywheels. The metal is flawed, causing the flywheel surface to become slightly wavy or bumpy as it wears down. The chatter is caused by the clutch disk trying to grip the high spots on the surface. Resurfacing these flywheels will not fix the problem permanently; it will just come back when the flywheel starts to wear down again. The flywheel MUST be replaced. I'm surprised that your dealer(s) didn't know this.

I had mine done recently and the dealer replaced the flywheel. Drives beautifully now.

I had mine done at 36,600 Miles and now I'm only up to 38,500. So far so good. If things change I'll post.

I have a '01 Protege Sedan and it does it sometimes when it is cold. When it warms up it is fine. I will replace it with a Hi Proformance one when I need to anyway. Might go Turbo.

That's how mine started also. Intermitently when cold. After a while is was always when cold and pretty soon it started doing it when it was warm also.

Chatter at 50 mph???

I've got an 03 MP5 and the car jerks a little between 45 & 55 mph. It only does this when the engine is cold and only after acceleration. Could this be clutch chatter??

Clutch chatter manifests itself (at least in my case) while I up-shift the car jerks a bit while I release the clutch and add gas. Almost as if I was going really slowly and not giving it enough gas while shifting.

crap i just put the intake on yesterday and i revved it about 5k to see how it sounded accelerating pretty quick and did a quick shift and it jerked like that. and when i was backing it into the driveway i had one CRAZY chatter. it sounded like the engine dropped out of the car or something

Uh Uhhh, chatter happens at low RPMs. Only when you are trying to drive smoothly, shifting low (3-3500 RPM) and easing the clutch out gently while giving only low to moderate gas.

It you're reving higher while just popping off the clutch and it jerks, that is normal.

And my car sounds like crap in reverse too.

So can anyone actually answer my question?

What parts were changed when you had the clutch chatter repaired bye the dealer.

if the major problem is the flywheel, is there any chance that Mazda would replace the flywheel at no charge with a aftermarket unit if we were to supply it? any mazda service or parts people out there to answer this?
