pulley

does anyone know if the unorthodox racing underdrive crank pulley really make 8-15 h.p. on average? does anyone have one and have any thing to say about it? is their any place else besides corksport to get one?

8-15 sounds a bit. . . . "optimistic". Kinda like those claims where they say "UP TO "______ gain in HP. Key words are "Up To"

I've never seen a crank pulley do anything for power unless it was attached to a belt powering a supercharger.

keep in mind that underdrive pulleys reduce parasitic drag, so they DO NOT increase horsepower...there is just less loss from the crank to your wheels...the majority of this loss is in the drivetrain, not the pulleys...i could possibly see a 7-8 hp gain with all the underdrive pulleys, but not just the crank pulley.

Summit Racing also sells Unorthodox Racing pulleys for the Protege5 - that's where I bought mine. It's an easy install. If you check Unorthodox Racing's web site, there is a dyno sheet showing a gain of about 3hp and 3lb-ft of torque in a Protege 2.0L. I think it's a worthwhile gain, as it is across the rev range and you will be able to notice it.

right, the just free up horsepower that's lost rotating that heavy pos.

How can 3hp/3lb/ft be noticeable behind the wheel?? I have a hard time catching 10+hp....

on the other hand some mods are either underrated or overachievers...my ebay SRI was supposed to add 5-7hp....and it dropped a full .2s off my 1/8th mile time....I have no idea how....it just worked.

back on topic. I don't see a pulley adding hardly anything, but were I to get one for free or dirt cheap I'd put it on....every little bit helps.

right...however, the smaller/lighter pulleys will wear out your alt and water pump quicker

Topher, you are correct - underdrive pulleys basically retrieve power that would otherwise be used up by the accessories and in rotational mass.

And, you won't notice the 3hp and 3lb-ft at peak power. But, you will notice it at lower rpms. Keep in mind that a stock Protege 2.0L is only putting down 60hp to the pavement at 3,000 rpm, running wide open. Peak power is somewhere around 5,700rpm.

As Roddimus said, every little bit helps. Intakes, exhaust, and pulleys are easily installed. After that, the low-hanging fruit has been picked, and it is time to think about other ways to build power. Like headers, cams, etc. That is where I am at now.

perhaps you should check out my list 'o mods:

http://www.protegeclub.com/forum/sho...threadid=34510

i'm to the point that i should upgrade my cams and get higher compression pistons with wagner's AEM or i should boost it. decisions, decisions.
