shifting from moving forward to R...

My PR5 is the first manual tranny car that i've had and after a few thousand miles behind the wheel, i think i've gotten pretty smooth. no heel and toe downshifts yet but i'm working on it ;].

i have one question though. i know i can shift into first and get going from rolling backwards but can i do the opposite? If i'm slowly rolling forward and shift it into reverse, i get a painful gear grinding noise and the shifter wont go into gear. naturally, i pull it out asap and come to a stop and try again. should i be able to do this? or is it a no no?

Grinding your syncros, but yeah, what he said. Don't do it.

I want to ask, but I know I shouldn't, but I can't help myself....

WHY? Why would you want to do what you desribed? You can't have a good answer, so just stop it.

my answer

i didn't know i was harming the car. i assumed reverse functions the same way as first in that i can be rolling int he opposite direction and still be able to put it into gear, the way i do when i back up. now that somebody told me it messes up the synchros, i wotn do it any more. is that a good enough answer?

anyway, thanks for the advice, my pr5 wont be subject to such treatment again.

Its normal. You must come to a complete stop before shifting into reverse.

In case we weren't clear, don't do it shifting into first either. You're causing the same extra wear, whether you hear awful noises or not.

If you're rolling backwards, stop the car with the brakes, then shift into first. If you're rolling forwards, stop the car with the brakes, then put it in reverse.

actually the first guy was right.
reverse gears don't have syncros, that is why reverse is usually harder to shift into. they are straight cut gears that engage directly to each other when shifted into reverse. the straight cut gears are also why reverse usually "whines" when you back up.

you MUST come to a complete stop before shifting into reverse....the actual gears are cut different......have you ever noticed when you are backing up that you can hear your car WHINE? sounds like its comming from the tranny right? that is because it is.....the gears for reverse are straight cut gears....the forward gears are not, they are helical cut gears.....anyway.....the froward gears are made in such a way and with the use of the syncros are DESIGNED to be shifted into while moving....like DUH! but the reverse gear is not......

I know we shouldn't shift into reverse as all of you said and because of all the reasons you guys provide.

but how do the guys that drive the stunts do it? like in the bmw movies... they are basically going forward real fast... do a turn really sharp then put it in reverse and then continue going... without stopping in between....

i think i can answer this...

they use the handbrake to do the 180. with the rear wheels locked up, the car is still "moving" but the drive wheels aren't so they can throw it into reverse. then they release the handbrake and get it going in the opposite direction. am i right?

I'm sure they have helical reverse gears equipped with synchros or something...
