If you're short on cash and just want to lower the semi-trucklike height of the shifter, there is an extension on the shifter that can be removed. Here's how:

-Unscrew the shift ****.
-Remove the dash panel surrounding the shifter- easiest way is by grabbing hold at the cupholders.
-Remove the shift boot by unhooking it at its base.
the extension, unfortunately, its held on by some industrial strength glue removing it will require some creativity. I removed mine by using a cutting wheel on my dremel drill and cutting through the metal from bottom to top on 2 opposite sides, then prying the extension off, and using a razor to clean the rubber from the shaft.
-The remaining shast is not threaded, so the stock **** will no longer work. Good excuse to buy a new one! I got mine at PepBoys (don't laugh- it look good!) for about $20. Its a short, black anatomical **** with perforated leather- matches the steering wheel really well!
- you'l also have to get creative with a new way to hold up the shifter boot- reply if you need some suggestions- its long and I don't feel like typing it out if you don't need the help

I did this mod and I used a propane torch to get the extension off.....it took about 15 seconds of heating it up, put an allen wrench trough the hole in the extension and then twist it off. I have instructions with pictures if anyone wants 'em let me know.
Here are a few pics of my new shifter....sorry no before pic.
The **** is a Ichibahn Aluminum and Leather. I left the shift boot alone. Just push it down into the tunnel and it will look fine. The boot is the same on the MP3 and this is how they did it.

The little **** is for my amp....it adjusts the bass

Removing the extension looks good. The only problem is the shift throw is still really long. I have the B&M shifter and it feels great, very precise. Probably around the same height as the pictures, but with a shorter throw.

I want to get that kit....was it hard to install? Taking apart what I did was a piece of cake. What did you do for the shift boot?

What kit, you mean the B&M shifter? It's easy to install. It does require getting under the car to remove one bolt to release the stock shift lever. The height is low enough that the boot stays just below my MazdaSpeed shift ****.

I shortened my shifter and originally used a blue anodized aluminum ****. However, it was cold in the morning, and my wife complained about it. So I made a way to re-use the factor ****. You have to take the extension, cut it where the thread rod attaches to the hollow cylinder. Then, grind this down until it will fit inside the hole in the shifter rod. Then, drill a hole and put a 1/8 inch bolt w/ nut through the hole. Then you can thread on the factory ****.

You can even cut the shift rod down more if it's still too high!
