I'd like to start off by saying I don't have a Protege (but I'm picking up a P5 in the near future)
Regarding ignition components:
In my current car (92 Sonata with a transplanted Mitsubishi 2L engine) I've used NGK G-Power platinum plugs with a nice set of NGK wires (are all NGK wires blue?), and when I decided to switch to NGK Iridium plugs I noticed a huge difference right away; not only did my car start-up easier (especially in really cold wheather here in Canada), but they fired better at high rpms and decreased my fuel consumption.
As for platinum plugs, not all are created equal. I have a part time job as a parts guy working directly with the mechanics at a shop, and they all insist Bosch platinum plugs are garbage, they absolutely refuse to put them in any cars they work on, and the AC Delco platinum plugs are almost as good as the NGKs but are even more expensive than NGK Iridiums.
Of course all my impressions have to do with naturally-aspirated engines, and don't know how they'd react with highly-tuned engines.

ik 20
i've read that the ik20's are 4 ranges colder.........is this correct because according to the application guide at iridiumpower.com the 2002 protege es uses ik20. All i have done to my engine is an ingen cai and magnecor spark plug wires.......i just installed the iridium's today (on the box they say ik20-5304), but if these are really 4 ranges colder they will fould real quick right?
