Speed Limiter Q's

I drive a Protege 2002 ES 2.0l auto, and I am wondering about the Speed Limiter on the car. I heard it was limited to 176kph, but I've had the car doing 198kph before. *BTW this is down a hill, so don't flame me about my car not being able to reach such speeds.* I've never felt a speed limiter before, so what exactly does it do, and what does it feel like? And just out of curiousity, what speed are our stock tires rated up to? I know they're V rated, but I forgot what that was in max kph. Lemme know. Thx.

This was beaten like a dead horse a while ago, run a search....

from what I remember there is no "speed" limiter on protege's...They are simply drag limited, the top speed is met when the engine power can no longer accelerate the car do to air resistance...

V rated tires =149 MPH, 240km/h

According to Car and Driver magazine, the Protege is limited to 117MPH, 190km/h.

Oh ******!!!

In that case I apologise, I was just wondering. Any thoughts on how my car would do against an automatic 1996 Camry? Its the 197hp model.

I think that is wrong, I have gone faster than that in a P5, and I vaguely remember the other Car and Driver test of Protege5's states that it was drag limited, not electronically...

Well I looked up the P5 too and it does not state that it is limited so i'm going to assume it's drag limited at 112 MPH. Maybe on the P5 the electronic limiter kicks in at the same speed as the sedan but the P5 can't make it up that fast.

i know for a fact i've hit 120 mph before, and haven't felt a limiter, but i'm casred of pushing it too hard because the rpm's are already high enough as it is sooo...

I don't mean to bring back the Thread that Wouldn't Die, but my 99 1.8L DEFINITELY has a limiter that kicks in at ~117 mph, like Pollax said. However, it's been conclusively demonstrated that the 2.0L cars do NOT have a limiter.

Ok .... out of all the threads that have gone on about this speed limiter

I conclude that

the 1.8Ls FP-DEs (99-00) - Have Speed Limiters set at 190kmph about 117mph
the 2.0Ls FS-DEs (01+) - Do not have speed limiters

I have definately hit my speed limiter a number of times. SO i can definately confirm that the 1.8Ls have speed limiters for sure.

So that is what i conclude about the speed limiter topic ..... the FP-DEs have it, the FS-DEs don't.

Is everyone satisfied with that conclusion....

If there is a 1.8L that has gone past 120mph (about 190kmph), without hitting sometype of speed limiter ... then tell me now....

and if there is a 2.0L that has hit a speed limiter (not rev limiter), then please tell me now ....

My Mazdaspeed shuts off at 137 Mph. I was on open road for 54 miles no one around and she shut off. So maybe Mazdaspeed is different.

That's the boost limiter. If you're driving at WOT in like th gear, that's a shitload of boost being made. THe ECU shuts it off.

I don't know about that. The callaway turbo system utilizes a wastegate to allow for a maximum boost pressure. The ECU has a boost limiter that is preset for something like 10psi, meaning some jackass couln't buy a boost controller and bump it up to 15psi on the stock system. But a stock MSP will not reach 10psi becuase the wastegate will vent once a certain (5.2psi or somthing) is met. If there was on wastegate, you would reach the boost controller in every gear at high rpm...

FWIW I do remember seeing a preview of the MSP a few months ago that said the prodcution vehicles would be speed limited in the neighborhood of 135 mph...

The car will run up to 12 psi before boost cut off ingauges. But you are right the car does have a speed limit set into the ECU. The car car still go 132 at 6 psi of boost, so it is not a boost limiter.
