Anyways, if they can't fix it, and they don't wanna replace it, maybe you got a lemon. Sucks that it sounds like you have to take to court. Hope you're not too distraught with the Protege experience. MOST (not all, of course) of the protege owners here are pretty happy with their cars.

When I had my sedan and when I had around 20,000 Miles on her, the idle was around 700 RPM and was rough. She almost stalled a couple times but I was able to catch her with a throttle blip. No check engine lights were on. I had a K & N drop in filter and it was dirty due to driving conditions I drive in. I got the cleaner kit and cleaned the filter in 30 minutes. Fixed the problem right away.
I thought I should have went longer without a cleaning but I guess the filter needed it. The quicker you clean a dirty filter, the less restriction you will have on your intake and the engine will run better.
This is the only thing I can think of..........
