Question Tachometer Help!!

I'm going to buy a used tach off of a 2001 Honda Civic and was wondering how I would install it. What do I wire to and is it a good idea to screw to the top of my dash? I don't know if I want to put holes on my dash and deside to get rid of the tach. Anyway, someone told me about wiring it to the air box, I don't know? Please help!!

Re: Tachometer Help

You can buy a pod that replaces the top cover over the steering post assuming that the tach you are getting will fit. You could buy a mount and then drill out your upper steering wheel cover to secure it. Then you would only have to replace the cover if you chose not to use it. Gauge pods are also available to mount instruments in the trim in front of your door.

You do not hook up a tach to your air box. The tach has 4 wires: +12 Volts, Gnd, Lights and the tach drive wire. The tach drive wire is connected to the violet/white wire coming out of the diagnostic port which is located on the left side of the engine bay near the ground plate for the batt. negative cable.

Question Tach Installation

Okay, I bought the tach from my friend and was wondering how to install it. Do I have to go through my firewall and do I just let the wires hang from the dash or drill a hole in the dash to put the wire through? I've never seen anyone install a tach before. Please help!! Thank You!!

ProtegeSean,

The tach pick-up wire must go through the firewall. The usual proceedure is to find a grommet in the firewall through which existing wires already travel, spread the opening with a screwdriver and pass the new wire through. The other 3 wires can be connected inside the instrument panel to the appropriate circuits.

Your Welcome

I'm glad I could help. If you get a chance, let us know where you ended up mounting the tach.
