timing ?

What are the advantages and/or disadvantages of advancing the timing on the 2.0L motors? My real only piston mazda experience is w/ miatas and I know you can get good results from advancing their timing to 14 degrees...but what about on the proteges? Can you even do so w/ the ignition they have?

As of now there is no way to advnace the timing on the Protege without a stand alone or a piggyback unit. The Hal and crank sensors prohibit this....Tamper Proof OBD II suscks doesn't it.

99+ Miatas use an ECU-controlled non-adjustable timing system just like the Protege, and I've heard that some Miata owners have slotted the CMP and CKP sensor bolt holes and re-angled the sensors to fool the ECU into changing the timing. You might want to search some Miata forums for more information. If you succeed you can tell us how you did it.

on the 2.0L protege, THEMAN has proven that if you run higher octane, the computer will advance the timing as much as i think 30 degrees, (i can't remember exactly but it was alot, might of been 60). not saying it will work on EVERYCAR, but his car does it and mine runs better on it.

Wow! that's pretty cool. Are you talking about just "premium"91 octane from the pump?

yes i am. there have been alot of heated discusions on the board before about octane. I personally feel the difference in my car, with high octane, i can accel in 5th gear up steep hills at 70 mph and with reg i can't. remember to reset your ecu if you do decide to use high octane.

Thank's for the info, I'll give it a whirl next time I fill up.
Re-set the ecu... that's the "disconnect the negative battery cable" trick that Sir Nuke was talking about, I think.

pretty much, disconnect the batt for about 5 min, the hook it back up and start the car and let it idle for about 15 min and let the ecu learn the system

I have a Protege5 2.0L engine...and i do believe that running higher octane like 91 makes my car run better...but is this true??

I haven't resetted my ecu when filling w/ 91 octane...has anyone tried this?? IS there really a difference when resetting the ecu??

Also...i am running a NX 50 shot wet...will this cause problems for me??
