TSB on Clutch chatter not found by dealer
#16
Your not asking me but I'll answer anyway. The revised parts are not really "revised." They are just from a 97+ 626 I-4. The chatter was/is caused by "hot spots" on the clutch disc and/or flywheel that would grip better than the other spots.

wrong
I checked the 626 of all years and the part numbers for all 3 components do not match.
The clutch disc has not been revised; it's the same part as it was before. The pressure plate and flywheel has been revised.

01-004/03 2001-2003 PROTEGE/PROTEGE5 - RATTLING NOISE AT 1000-3000 RPM COLD ENGINE
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2001-2003 Protege (2.0L FS only)
2002-2003 Protege5
DESCRIPTION
Some customers may experience an engine rattle noise under light to moderate acceleration with engine coolant temperatures below 65 C (149 F) and engine RPMs between 1000 and 2900 RPM.
The noise is the result of the intentional swirl effect that is generated when the Variable Tumble Control System (VTCS) plates in the intake manifold are closed. Swirl accelerates the burn of the air/fuel mixture which reduces emissions when the engine is cold. The noise does not have a negative effect on the engine, and disappears as soon as coolant temperature reaches 65 C (149 F). There is a counter-measure to help reduce the noise in order to improve customer satisfaction.
Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using one of the following procedures:
REPAIR PROCEDURE
Verify customer concern.
Check vehicle VIN range:
From VIN JM1BJ2***1*400001 to JM1BJ2***2*551281, go to step 3.
From VIN JM1BJ2***2*551282 to JM1BJ2***3*644493, go to step 4.
Replace the VTCS delay valve, then proceed to step 4.
Reprogram the PCM using WDS (Version B22 or later), verify the correct calibration from the table below:

Is what I'm experiencing clutch chatter? Or just a cold tranny? Want to make sure before it warms up:
Starting from first gear seems just fine. When its cold out and my car has been sitting outside in the cold, after going through first, I'll put the clutch in, shift to second, and let the clutch out as usual. Instead of engaging, it doesn't do it right away, and then all of a sudden just catches and kind of jerks my car. It will do this for 3 or 4 times until the tranny warms up. The only solution is to let the clutch out VERY slowly and drive pretty slow until it warms up.
I don't really have a problem with it, just want to see if I can get it fixed if it IS a problem . Thanks!
Chris

mine only chattered for about the first couple take offs from a stop. When they replaced my parts they stated as edwin that something was different with the flywheel and pressure plate. I'm just glad my car doesn't shudder any more.

Today I called Mazda customer service. I talked with a lady who said she would confirm the TSB and explain it to my dealer... but 20 minutes later she called back telling me that she found no TSB of my P5s VIN number. When I explained by sources (everyone here, and the FAQ) she said to make sure it wasnt for older protege's
Just to confirm the obvious here...a 2002 P5 is a third generation protege, correct?
I live in Southeast WI. Could it be possilble that some TSBs are regional in nature, for example applying on the west coast, but not the east coast?
I hesitate to ask this, because it would be a noble favor to a complete stranger, but... If someone here that works for Mazda and has direct knowledge of this TSB would like to help me out, by maybe talking with the lady that worked with me today (I have a case #), and explaining the info available to you, let me know. We can talk more in detail through private messaging or by phone.
Otherwise, it seems like this is the end of the road. I don't know who else I can talk to. It's kind of sad that Mazda can't coordinate their own information well enough so that people trying to look for it can find it.

Thanks for all the help guys, and for your suggestion chevywolf2.
I may have to try another dealer and see if they are willing to help me. The service manager I'm dealing with now didn't want to look at the copy of the TSB that I printed off of the FAQ (which looks similar to the one you posted for me, chevywolf2). Basically, he said it's not officially from mazda and that he would do a search himself using my VIN. A day later, after asking him to check again using info from my copy of the TSB, he said he didn't even recognize the format of the TSB number, and said that it didnt specify any VIN numbers. I basically felt like I was being dismissed.
Is the ESI system that bad that the TSB won't even come up with a VIN number? Sounds like it's a pretty useless tool for you folks having to deal with it for your work.
I have the summer off, so I think I'll wait till then to tackle this again. I'm pretty sick of dealing with this right now. For now I'm calling mazda again and having them note my complaint so its official somewhere. I got plenty left on the warranty yet, so it should be good. Again, though, to everyone who helped out, thanks a million. That's what these enthusiast groups are all about.
