Wagner 2.0 Cams (Matty)
#48
I talk to Andrew today and the cams will give power gains anywhere from 15 to 20 WHP depending on what you got. They got an extra 24 WHP on a MP5 with a MP3 ECU, Wagner Header, catback, CAI, for a total of 161 whp. That's was the same WHP as my WRX was stock. He has two sets of cams on they way, so if you order today in less than a month you could have a set of cams.
juddz,
I hear ya brother but we are just of few Protégé owners that are serious compared to hundreds of Acura, Mistu , Suby, Volvo etc owners. If the Protégé community would ever come together there would be tons of support. I been in a dozen or so failed group buys promises to manufacture to get x amount of buyser so a product would be made only to get only one or two serious takers. Support has increased 500% in the last few years but now that will change with the Protégé to Mazda3 change over. The Protégé has hit its peak in aftermarket support in my view. I've got almost $100K in my Protégé but I helped, KVR, Good Ridge, Cork Sport, Willwood, Wagner Motorsports, Precision Brake Company, and AWR develop parts for our cars, some that will never be mass produce and some that will. Best of all I kick the **** out of GT3 Porches, Zo6 Corvettes, Lotuses, Chaterhams, etc or at least give them a run for there money at the local solo races. And I’m still not even close done developing the car. Last race we did we where pulling 1.13 gs, 200whp/torque. In fact the safety steward gave me a lecture on the control of my car because of the “ridiculous amount of horse power causing me to do a 900 spin taking out a ton of cones”. The tires where really, really cold and I was a little too pump up so I went into an off camber corner a little to hot had spun the hell out of it. Plus we had to much rear brake bias, sway bar was a little to stiff and few degrees short on rear negative camber.
So keep up the hard work and make that 5.0, EVO, or STi work for it.

No need to misconstrue my post noting that we have a limited selection of aftermarket parts as anything against Wagner or any other company. I think there is a market for Protege parts. After all, if the aftermarket can support the Mini, they certainly can support us as well - and profitably if well marketed. The vendors we do have supporting us are by and large great companies to work with.
As far as Protege owners not having a lot of money - speak for yourself. I blew over 20G on my loaded P5, and it's not the only (recent model year) car that I own. If saving money was all I was interested in, I would have purchased a Kia or something similar. Considering that Mazdas typically are so communicative and well handling, the low prioe just happens to mean that they are a decent value as well as a lot of fun. More fun, in fact, than a lot of other cars out there. Once upon a time, I did own a Mustang. And despite great aftermarket support for the Ford, I wouldn't want to give up my Mazda for one. Or for a Civic, for that matter.

wow indeed...indeed! Any clue on when/if they'll be available?
Edit: Although they've kind of taken two different paths/topics, I think somebody should try to combine the two "wagner cam" posts open right now, and put all information into one post, becasue right after I originally posted this, the other one had a new post. If nobody else will combine the two, I'll do it when I get a chance and am not being lazy.

yea and somebody else dyno them so we can confirm or dispute the gains (plus see what it does with other mods)
I suspect the mp3 ecu helped a lot to get them to 161 whp
I am still amazed by that figure - at that rate they should be neck and neck with a stock MSP

depending on the powercurve.....remember it's not the peak number that wins races...it's the area under the curve!!
p.s. I'll get the cams and do a B&A dyno...but they'll be on my supercharger,...so we'll do a supercharged-stock cam run and a supercharged new cam run to show off what kind of gains you can get.

I called a few places around here to see how much it would cost to put the cams in and it will run 3-4 hundred. So all together about 900-1000.00, man I want them but I just can't part with that much right now. Otherwise I would put in an order today. Just think, 9 lbs flywheel and pulleys complete exhaust not just the cat back should prove some nice numbers. The only thing I wont have are the MP3 ECU and the Cams, the main peaces to the puzzle! And I'm sure if you went with the MP# intake manifold that would help even more.
