Weird noises when shifting to third?

My 2002 Pro LX is making a noise like the gears are grinding when I shift it into third. It only does it when i am accelerating hard. It doesnt *feel* any different, it gets into 3rd just fine, it just makes a noise.

I noticed if I double clutch it wont do it - but I also noticed if I let the engine slow down just a little bit before pushing it into 3rd it will also not do it. So the double clutch thing might just be because it takes that extra half second to do.

Any ideas what it could be? Seems like it would be a bad syncro, but I dont really know. ANy ideas if this is covered under warentee?

Thanks!

Sounds exactly like a bad synchro. (A little "crunch" as it goes in, right?) Should be covered under warranty.

I have the samw thing on 1-2 shift. I have to let the revs drop or the shifter won't fall into place. this started happening after i got the engine broken in pretty well, around 10K miles and hasnt stopped since. I believe a lightened flywheel will resolve my issue, but you'll definitely need to get to a shop and have them check out your trans internals.

I love warranties.

yah, worn syncro. you guys are probably shifting too fast because the flywheel is light and spins down pretty fast.

gas a tad (very small amount) to keep the flywheel from
spinning down so fast before you revmatch to engage
the next gear. each shift up requires a rev match especially
if you have the AC on.
