2001 Protege #3 Engine Mount Oil Filled?
Is the 2001 Protege #3 Engine Mount Oil Filled? We can see it's clearly bad (split on lower "pull-away" torque point), but there's all this hydraulic-looking fluid around the thing, leaking down the inside engine compartment wall from it, but the dealer service/parts dept say the thing is solid rubber, not oil filled.http://www.protegeclub.com/newthread...ewthread&f=26#

(Car was hit from the rear _hard_, in the shop for a month, and they missed this! Some "Collison Center!")http://www.protegeclub.com/newthread...ewthread&f=26#

Roddimus & the Group,
Just talked to someone at autopartswarehouse.com, and he says the thing IS oil filled! (!!!???) At the time, we were both looking at the same image:

Now, I know it LOOKS like a solid, but could it _still_ be oil-filled? This is driving us nuts.
Thanks in advance!

Try contacting Ken at www.protegegarage.com as he should certainly know this kinda thing. Either that, or try your local dealership (but don't expect much from them unless you know they have some good employees..)

Already Been to the Dealership...
...and it's puzzling _them_, too; This is driving us nuts. There's just no other place around that spot that clear, near-odorless hydraulic fluid could be leaking from. (It ain't engine oil.) And it seems to have been coming from that split in the rubber. The leak has slowed to almost nothing now, perhaps because whatever internal oil pockets this thing had have drained. (Pure speculation.)
It IS more expensive than the other mounts... hmm.
Well, the part is coming in Thursday, we _think_ (it's coming from Ohio, and you know how THAT goes), so we'll get a look at it then...the thing is, there just are not enough 2001 automatic Protege's that have had that mount go bad...626's, Millennias, yes...but there's not been a large database on replacement, I guess.
Did drop a line to Ken...tnx for the referral.

Oil-Filled Confirmed!!
Well, they yanked it out at the Mazda Dealer here, and guess what, folks, _it's oil filled_!! It's leaking, gooey carcass is sitting right here on the workbench!
Well, more like "oil chambered"; the tech pried the split rubber back, and there, lo and behold, was a small internal chamber containing ( and still leaking) _oil_. It seems the thing has several internal hollow "pockets", so that it LOOKS like solid rubber on the outside, but on the inside are molded chambers containing shock-absorbing oil.
It was rather amusing to see the Asst. Service Manager ("There's no way that can be oil filled!") have to eat crow. They guy didn't even want to admit he'd been wrong when we had the thing right under his nose! Finally had to, though. Some guys have an awful lot (too much) invested in Being Right.
The Service Manager was amused...at least he admitted he didn't know for sure when the problem was first presented to him.
Know who did? The parts guy.
"Yeah," he said, "we've had to replace a few of these 'cause they just started leaking goo after they just split a little."
Looks like they ought to think about making HIM a Asst. Service Rep!
Picture of the carcass at:
www.moonlightsys.com/mazda/
...and Mazda could be a LOT more forthcoming in their parts descriptions; like, how much does it take to add "oil-filled" to the description? I mean, c'mon! Are they still using DOS, and are limited to 8 characters???
