2002 Mazda Protege LX noises

I recently purchased a 2002 Protege LX, auto transmission. At speeds between 72-74MPH, and either keeping a constant speed or accelerating, I hear a high pitched whistling noise. It sounds like the noise you hear when the Emergency Broadcast System is testing on your television (only in a faint fashion). If I let off the gas even a little the noise stops. The noise doesn't appear to happen like this at any other speed.

This is in my opinion either a engine or transmission noise. The car has about 1,300 miles. The dealer said this is a "harmonic" noise and there is nothing they can do. I'm very disappointed in that this is the speed that I will do about 90% of my driving, and this noise will drive me totally crazy. Anyone have a similar experience?

I read the FAQ before I posted. Are you referring to the windshield wipers??? I have a hard time believing that is where the noise is coming from, since the noise only happens at the same speed, and doesn't happen at the speeds if de-accelerating. But what the heck, I'll take the wipers off and drive at the speed and see what happens and let you know what happened.

Dude !, I have the exact same problem on my car.

I have a 2000 Protege Es, I have new windshield wipers so that cant be the problem.

We need to find an answer to this and correct it , its very annoying.

I have the same problem

Hey I own a 99 Protege 1.6L Automatic, with 72,000 miles on it and I have the same problem. When driving at highway speeds, i hear a low volume high pitched noise coming from under the hood and its goes away when you slow down. I was told when I bought the car this was normal. I have also heard this in other 99+ automatic Protege's. So i guess its just normal. I have never had any problems with mine and I love it.
Just thought I would let you know.

Thanks,
Barry

are you guys talking about a faint high pitch hum from the engine bay when cruising at about 75? If that's what you're talking about I got that too. I actually don't mind it at all, sounds kinda cool actually . Also, as you get faster it gets louder and becomes really noticeable around 90mph, in case you guys haven't get it up that fast.

hmm, I guess if so many people have this 'hum' in the Pro, must be normal then!

LOL.

reply on the noise in transmission

i have just gotten my car back for the dealership and they told me that my transmission is slipping and they are going to replace it free my because my car is under warranty if you car is making the whinning noice its you transmission starting to slip, if you have this problem take you car to the dealer and get it check, its all in a matter of time before you transmission takes a dump on you going 70, 80 & 90mph and that will not be a happy story
