Everything I've heard is that it's a nice EMS. I don't know of anyone ofhand currently running it, though. I know Roddimus Prime has been partial to the Haltechs.
That's about all I can tell you though, I'm too poor to buy one.
Plus, I'd probably blow up my engine even if I did have one.

Haha, thanks for the input. I havent gotten around to checking out the Halthechs yet, but i will within the next couple of days. Im not too worried about the money, ad im hoping that spending the extra will prevent the ngine from blowing.
Anyone else heard anything?

the AEM is probably the best EMS money can buy....however there is no system for the protege. You'll have to purchase a generic box for a honda and modify the insides to make it work. Also, you'll have to hardwire it into your system which is no real problem. If I'm not mistaken the AEM will set you back about $1500 and another $800 or so if you want a plug and play harness built.

Roddimus, thanks for the info, but i actually did find one specifically for Mazda. And it isnt too much either. If anyone has heard of Mental Addiction Motorsports, a largely custom shop out of Arizona, they put one together just last year. If you follow through all 25 and some pages in the link above, you will see the whole process. Its a lot of reading, but for people like me who dont know much about them, i learned a lot. But basically, if you go check their web site
www.mentaladdictionmotorsports.com
you will see that they do have one for the protege! Celebration time, especially because it runs at only $1495. This is def going on my must have list.
They pretty much did what you talked about, but i think they started with an acura box, custom rewired all the harnesses for the mazda and (at least at the beginning) did individual custom system mapping. I think now they have gone to generic system maps for the masses.

you just said the exact same thing I did.....$1500 for the AEM, it's a modified honda box.... you have to pay EXTRA for the harness for the mazda...it's a LOT of money. If I were you I'd just buy the box modified for the car and hardwire it into your stock harness.

did i misread this one on the bottom of the ad?

The price indicated INCLUDES a Protege Specific wiring harness that will need to be spliced into your stock harness. This unit DOES utilize STOCK sensors!

yes you misread it. All AEMs come with a harness but a PROTEGE-SPECIFIC plug and play harness is about $700-800 extra.

what I said is you'll have to hardwire it into your system.....it means you take their generic harness and sit in your floorboard for 2 days with a pinout chart and cut and splice wires.

haha, i read through the article about some guys doing that, there are about 104 wires...no way am i trying to tackle that one on my own. I will have to check on the wire harness, i thought they were one and the same since it said it includes a protege specific wiring plug...thanks for the advice, i will keep looking

Ha, AEM is nowhere near the best ECU money can buy Check out a Motec M800 or a Magnetti Marelli Marvel line ECU, and prepare to be blown away.

If you really want that a high level of control, I much prefer Wolf over Haltech. I've seen too many motors let go from Haltech's innacurate timing control ... and the new Wolf software completely destroys Haltech ... oh, and the Wolf is cheaper

Wolf might have a plug and play that would work from some Protege's, I'll have to check into it.

I'm just saying for street driven proteges (not all out racers).

The AEM has a cool auto-map feature that will allow you to tune your car decently without making any adjustments (fine tuning is needed), It also has inputs that can use a wideband o2 for AUTOMATIC closed loop tuning...just set your desired AFR and it'll strive for it without any input from you.

other systems do this also but i've used a few others and the aem seemed to me to be the easiest system with the most features.

I'm still debating on the e-manage ultimate or the Megasquirt2 for my car....money is getting tight and I need something for 200-250whp...thats all.

The AEM auto-tune is horrible honestly, the communication is just too slow. So it's always a few cells behind where the engine actually is. To make it work it has to have a faster communication protocol, like the Motec that uses Ethernet ... others use firewire and USB. I'd never use the AEM closed loop, that would just be asking for a blown motor.

The Megasquirt is a good unit ... should talk to Scott at Mazsport about it, he uses them on RX-8's quite successfully. Also, if you want a Wolf, I can get you one cheap (~$1200 complete).

I may do that...I need to find a competent local tuner here first. They are hard to come by unless you have a muctang or camaro. They consider tuning as using a handheld OBDII re-flasher...

Looking into the Megaquirt, is there a good website for info about the Wolf EMS?
