Clutch Chatter

Clutch Chatter
Pro5 with chatter going into first... Does not happen all the time. More often when first starting off in the morn (cold) and pushing it from a complete stop.
I brought it to the dealer and was able to duplicate it just a bit. Though I was told it was most likely the way I drive and the position of the clutch at the time. I've never had this problem with past manuals (91 honda civic si and 93 Subaru Impreza).
Anyone else with this problem out there? Mazda is not aware of any.
I found this link with possible causes: http://www.capclutch.com/clutchchatter.html
The dealer did offer to replace regardless, though I'd hate to waste their time and money if it's me.

01 and 02 Miatas suffer from the same problem. About a week ago talk surfaced on www.miataforum.com about a TSB for a fix. It sounds like the same problem you guys are having. Maybe the TSB applies to 3rd gen Proteges. I'll post links later tonight b/c the forum is down, but you can look in the 99 forum if you get to it before I do.

I knew if I did a search I would find something on this problem.
I recently have been having a clutch chatter problem with my P5 but I thought it was me but after talking to my dealer he said he has fixed several P5s already. Unlike most of the other threads I have read, I only have this problem in reverse. It is scary as it sounds like something is ready to break. It only started in the last few weeks and I am at around 20,000 km.
Anyway I have an appointment in the new year to take it in and get it fixed. I have a great Mazda dealer (Jarman Mazda) here in Edmonton.

Chris,
I've got the exact same thing. My car is at 21,588 Km, so we're pretty close. My dealer gives me the "can't reproduce" bullshit...
It sounds ok to me, as this was even a problem on the S15 Silvias and such... I try to ignore it, and if my clutch goes, Mazda can damn well fix it.

My P5 does it as well, sometime pretty severely, and usually in the mornings. Happens in 1st gear mostly. Lately, its been happening at times when the car is warm as well. I think the condition is aggravated by the soft engine mounts. I'll be taking it in soon to the dealer, and hopefully it will be taken care of.
According to the FAQ information on this site, there is a Techinal Service Bulletin on this exact problem, and it calls for clutch disk, clutch cover, and flywheel replacement.

A few people in Toronto have had their clutches, etc replaced under warranty because of this problem. (one mp3, two p5s I think). So your dealership should be able to take care of it for you.

Funny when I mentioned it to my service guy he said he knew exactly what the problem was and told me to bring it in. As for being able to reproduce it, I can barely do that. Also, I see some people have been getting this problem when it is cold but mine happens when the engine is warmed up.

Mine does it all the time as well, regardless of temperature... Let me know if you get it fixed...

I've been having the same thing. I've had this before in other cars, so I dismissed it without paying much attention to the circumstances. It does seem very sporadic, though, not being specific to temp or timing. The main thing I notice is that it's ONLY under normal driving. It's NEVER happened when I push it. May get a little wheel hop, but that's completely different.

Refer to the TSB in the FAQ, and talk nice to your (or one of the other....) dealers. I got mine replaced already under warranty at North Hill. Ryan didn't insist that I reproduce it, I was just nice to them in explaining carefully what was happening for me and what I had read in here (keeping in mind I bought my car there). If you have clutch chatter as you describe, it should be repairable under warranty.
If one of the moderators happens to stumble in on this thread, could they maybe post a sticky to the TSB pages for the clutch chatter? I have seen several clutch chatter threads lately.
Nick, good luck in getting that looked after.
Dale.
