Cold starting/Power kick?

Something I have noticed when driving the pro first thing in the morning. When I start it, I let her sit and idle for about 20-30 seconds "to get the blood flowing". When I leave, I can barely push the gas down so it slowly revs up, and around 2.5-2.8 there seems to be a kick, and feels like more power was added. Shift gears up, slowly rev, and it does it again. All in all, it does it until the engine temp needle starts to move, then it stops.

Also, my father's Miata does this, but it is around 32oo rpms, and a bigger "kick".

Anyone know what I am talking about and what could be causing it?

I think I remember reading somewhere that VTCS is the cause of that, but I'm not 100% on that. Something about how it tumbles the air inside the intake mani until the engine warms up results in a loss of performance on the bottom end, then when it shuts off all is back to normal.

Lemme search around some more, but I think that it's normal and just the way our cars are meant to be.

It is the VTCS. As far as a power kick, it's more than likely just the VTCS kicking in and out between those RPM's as that is only when it works when the engine is cold.
