Crappy horn...

I'm asking this because you're an electrical engineer. You're running two horns each drawing about 4 amps for a total of about 8 amps, right? The factory wiring seems to be a thin 18-gauge. In your experience, is this safe? Won't it overheat the wiring?

Also, like The Man said, if there is a 15amp fuse there, it means the wiring is designed to take much more than that.

sorry to possibly hijack here but my 02P5 horn is dying on me @ 4K miles....anyone else have that issue? I'll bring it to dealer and have them go stock.....for now.....
Though the Dixie horn from the General Lee is a possibilty....
FWIW I don't believe the horn issue is in regards to a charging issue as in having heat, wipers, headlights all at once...I don't see them dimming.....being in Boston I use the horn alot

I'm sorry that your horn is starting to go. Not to discount the wisdom of TheMan and LOS-323, but please let us know if the problem is the wiring or the horn.
Yep, Boston sure demands a lot of hornwork. I believe the city is notorious for aggressive driving all around.

It was actually a dual horn kit, but I only installed one horn. Works pretty well.

I thought of installing just one... but the sound of both complement each other. It sounds fuller. If you have the time, and the space, I would definitely suggest you install the other one as well. It really sounds better.

I installed a second horn last weekend. BIG difference.
Installed it next to the fluid bottle near where aftermarket intake filters are situated. There are several 6mm holes here.
Since I couldn't make it face the front there, the disc horn was installed facing down to reflect the soundwaves off the road for a reverb effect.
I tried it face up, but the insulation material on the hood absorbed some of sound.
It's so LOUD it hurts! It sounds exactly like a Mercedes Benz now.

I replaced the OEM with an aftermarket disc horn, so it fires forward from the grill. I stuck the OEM horn facing downwards by the fluid bottle inside the engine bay.
The aftermarket horn is called Blazer (got a lo-tone because the OEM is hi-tone), but it's manufactured by FIAMM. I got it at AutoZone for about 15 bux.

Anyone know a site that has horn sound samples?

If you've removed the front grill before, then it's a really easy install.
If you haven't removed the front grill before, then just let me know and I can show you how to remove it or you can try a search here.
The easiest way would be to keep the OEM horn where it is, then using a T-tap (looks like a plastic clip. they're usually blue), tap into the wire connected to the OEM horn. Run this wire to the new aftermarket horn. I will take a photo if you need help.
If you want to hear sound samples, try:
http://www.fiammamerica.com/ProductS...bCategoryID=27 (Choose a product from the dropdown on the right side. Some items will have sound samples)
http://www.wolo-mfg.com
See my post earlier in this thread about the three major types of car horns. It will give you an idea about the kind of sounds each one makes.
