EGR ... where is it?

My check engine light came on recently, and I went to Auto Zone to have them check out what's going on. And it says "Insufficient EGR flow". First off, I wanted to know how many parts there is to this little system (all I know of is gasket, sensor, and valve) and then second, WHERE IS IT?!?! I wanted to pull one off a salvaged car, but even the guys that work there couldn't find it, so can anyone here tell me where to look for it and what all it consists of?

The EGR pipe bolts up to the side of the exhaust manifold. I would follow it and look for visible signs of leaking. My guess is that your EGR temperature sensor set the fault. It would be a good idea to check the appearance of the connections, and electrical characteristics (resistance) of this sensor.

I used to have a Mitsubishi SUV (Pajero / Montero!) .... The EGR on that SUV was easy to remove and clean or block with a blanking plate... ! I would like to give my Mazda's EGR valve a good clean... but I need to confirm its whereabout!

I took some shots of what I GUESS is the EGR valve!.... Could someone please confirm it is the EGR valve? I guess it's that "****" !!

The other thing, any advice from people who removed the valve on the easiest way to remove it.... THANKS

I guess now that we've kinda started to discuss this ... would it even be worth it to replace that little system. From what I gathered, it does nothing to improve gas mileage or anything of that sort, but only makes your car more environment friendly. So if I just found a way to bypass the electronic regulation to get that annoying check engine light to go off ... it would do just as good a job as replacing the whole system, right?

I've decided to go ahead and replace this little nuisance, but the place I talked to only has a sedan Protege. He said it was a 03 and should have the same engine as mine, but it's an hour away so I dont wanna drive all the way over there to pop the hood and find out it's not the same type of engine. So my question would be, do the 03 sedan and hatchback Proteges have the same engines or does it have to be a certain model of sedan? He said it had drum rear brakes ... so to you sedan gurus that might help distinguish which model he's talking about and whether or not the EGR would be the same as on my P5.

I'm not sure, but your pictures seem to focus on what looks to be a knock sensor. I replaced the knock sensor on my Maxima last year and it looks just like that. I could be wrong though. If I had a Protege right now, I'd go look for you, but I don't have one yet.

Looking at the photos on the site posted above by Bellydawg (Great help mate ... THANKS! ).... I think I guessed correctly about my EGR location. My engine is 1.5 so the location of the valve is different... but it should be the "****" in my photos above.

For cleaning, I usually sock the whole thing in Kerocine... and then use a tooth brush to clean the inside.

GREAT I have another "to do" job for this week.

clearing trouble (CEL) codes

Check engine light came on - on my way to emissions! They wouldn't pass me of course, but did read the code for me, P0402 - EGR related. I'm gonna clean the EGR per Vega122's instructions. Only thing it doesn't say is how to clear the code after I fix the problem. I heard I can unhook the battery to get the check engine light to turn off, but I want the trouble code cleared so when emissions checks it next time, it won't come up any more. I do not have any fancy diagnostic equipment, what can I do myself to clear the code from the computer?? Thanx

Assuming the problem is fixed, Unhook the battery terminal, then press the brake about 3 seconds and reconnect the battery.

Can it really be that easy?!! Cool, I'll try it. I also found on another website, another item to clean when code P0402 comes up. I read that it can also be blockage from a port directly behind the throttle body, inside the intake manifold itself - carbon blocked. While the EGR is removed, the throttle body should also be removed, using compressed air and carb cleaner to blow it out thru the EGR port. There is a gasket between the throttle body and manifold that may need replacing. It also mentioned checking the boost sensor for blockage, in case this doesn't completely fix the problem. That friggin carbon is a mthrfkr, I'm gonna go with a little hotter burning plugs and use good fuel treatment a little more often. Just hope I can get that code cleared off my computer. Thanx

Getting ready to pull the EGR for cleaning. In the link that Bellydawg provided, 122Vega says to reset the PCM. Is that the same as clearing the CEL ? Thanx again anybody....

^Yep. Same thing. PCM=ECU, both generate the Check Engine Light (CEL).

I'm getting ready to do this little clean-up and I'm wondering HOW to clear the CEL/PCM?

Edit: OK nevermind that, I didn't notice that question already got answered by Mac, but my next issue came up when I tried taking off the EGR.

I removed the intake tubing, and I tried taking out the screws that hold in the EGR, but they're in really really bad shape. They're all rusted up and stripped already, that I couldn't even get them to budge at all, especially in that little cramped space.

Anyone got any ideas on how I should approach removing that little sucker? I included a pic to let you guys see how bad of shape the screws are really in ...
