Has this problem been fixed in newer 2.0L protege's and protege 5's? What I mean is, can someone expect this problem if they bought a new 2002 model?

I have a 2002 P5 I bought in December and it has the rattle. I went to the dealership two weeks ago and started every P5 they had and they all have the rattle.

Do I hear formal complaint to mazda? I think enough of us have this problem, and it is starting to **** me off. I really don't feel like waiting around till Mazda gets off their *** and addresses the problem. Anyone agree?

rattle

I can't say for sure if I've noticed a rattle. I might hear the timing issue. When I start the car in cold mornings I agree that there is pinging. I will definately listen now.

Everyone do me a favor and vote in my poll in the 3rdgen forum called "Important All 2.0l" I want to see how many people actually notice something.

I am recording a sound clip tomorrow morning. It should turn out pretty decent. I will have it posted by mid afternoon.

I read this post in the "Mazda Protege5 Problems & Solutions" board on
Edmunds.com.

He states:

Thanks cpa...

I'm going to try a few more tanks of gas. Strangely, Mazda suggests that you use the lowest octane recommended for the car, which in this case is 87. We'll see if that helps.

On the engine rattle front, I have some very reassuring news. I just got off the phone with Mazda North America and a fix is indeed on the way. By mid-March dealers should have an ECU reprogram that will solve the problem. "
Anyone know if this is accurate information about Mazda North America sending out a ECU reprogram that will solve this "problem". Im not sure that I have this problem. The only thing that happens when its cold is the engine making a really loud noise when I first start it up. It sounds like a plane getting ready for takeoff! Does anyone have this problem with the rattle? Maybe I dont hear the rattle since that noise is so damn loud? Anyways, if it doesnt hurt anything, im happy I LOVE MY CAR!

added: How can we find out if Mazda has sent out any fixes to the dealers, which the fix would be covered under our warranty? I know that if something was wrong and would endanger the customer, Mazda would put out a recall and it would be fixed. How do we find out about little things, or things that really dont affect the car, but should be fixed if the owners wants it fixed?

btw, the guys w/the rattle.

Can you hear it when your windows are rolled up and radio and fan are off?

I can't hear any rattle, just loud engine noise when my windows are up.

Last night I tried driving after only warming up ~1 minute (just to get the oil flowing thru) and let my revs go up to 3K.

With my windows up, no discernable rattle.
With my windows down, I hear a rhythmic high pitched rubbing sound. I'm not sure if this is what you guys mean by rattle. Sounds more to me like metal rubbing like it's not lubbed up.

I have to try this again when I'm in an alley so I can hear my engine better.

I can definetly hear it with the windows rolled up and even the radio on slightly. Rattle is the best term I have heard to describe it. I am trying to record a cound clip so everyone can hear it.

I hear it more when the windows are down. It is most noticeable when I start the car in the morning.

Well the sound isnt noticeable when you forst start the car. It will sit there and idle just fine, its just that when you think you have the car warmed up and try to take of and you engine reacehs around 2700 RPM's is when the noise kicks in. I live in Oregon and it doesn't get that cold here. I let my **** warmup for 3-5 minutes in themroning before taking it out, and it still rattles until it reaches until I drive a few hundred feet or so.
