Engine or Tranny Whine?

I've checked through all the other engine whine threads, but I haven't found any answers to my problem. In the past 2 weeks I've noticed a high pitch whine when I accelerate above 4500rpms in any gear. It's definitely coming from the engine compartment, but I can't tell if it's tranny or engine related. I've just recently developed the hated clutch chatter on cold starts problem, but I don't think that it would be related. The only things that I've done to my car recently are add a stereo system and installed an exhaust, but I don't see how either of these could be related. I have a 2002.5 mp5 with a 5-speed. Anyone have any ideas? I'll be bringing it in to the dealer soon for service, but it wouldn't hurt to suggest some places he could look. Thanks!

shouldnt be a problem as you never need to cruise at 4500 rpm

Yeah, but when I'm accelerating from a stoplight in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, it freaks me out. It sounds like something is going to let go.

Well, if it's still under warranty, have the shop check the tranny or syncros in the tranny.

Re: Engine or Tranny Whine?

The noise you are hearing can be better described as a high fequency pitch, generated by your Mazda powertrain/engine running at a rev of higher then 3200 - 4500 to be exact, you have nothing to worry about this is normal but maybe limited to your lot number of car that you were sold, the cause has not been exactly identified but some users car emitts this frequency and some don't worry more if the frequency ceases then you will know that your engine will be in need of service or closer inspection. This problem effects both Standard cars such as your own as well as Protege Automatic 4 Speed 2.0 cars. Alot of cars emit these sounds natrually, most can not be heard beyond the engine compartment, while others / more powerful cars do emit such sounds at certain or all RPM levels.

"To better descibe the sound, at first glance/whisper it almost seems as if it sounds like a high pitch/interference from a AM radio."

If you would like more information about this please reply back to this forum thread.

wtf are you trying to say? You think that magnaflow makes bad exhaust systems or something? Funny, because the company that makes and bends Magnaflow exhaust systems also makes many of the factory and aftermarket exhaust systems for ALL vehicles. I'll give you 1 guess where Thermal gets their exhaust systems to name one.

Maybe you're a bigger fan of N1 style cans or something. More power to you. I can't stand the fart can "look at me" sound. It's not like one makes more power than the other.

Maybe your message really means that you like me in a "special way" because I have a magnaflow. If that's the case, why don't you keep your homoism to yourself.
