ES-GT Owners: What is your fuel economy?
#16
I wasnt complaining about the last one, btw that one was a 2.0L. Extra 100km per tank are you sure? I don't think that's accurare. Maybe 50km. Do you guys fill up when the light comes on?

Hello, I am also from Winnipeg, new 2003 p5 and get around 350km and think that is pretty low I thought for sure I could at leat get 400 450, will have to see when the summer comes How well it does, as for the Gas light Coming on it seems that as soon as it hits the 1/4 left its drops very fast and does not seem like there really is a 1/4 left more like a 1/8, Does anyone know How many litres are left when the gas light gets turned on ?

Is yours stick? Because if it was then that was similar to my LX 2.0 5spd. I still don't think that there is a 100km extra between the last 1/4 to the gas light. Hell I get 100km between the 3/4 line to the 1/2 line.

when i first got it, I never drove it right to the "E" (in fear of pulling thuru contaiments into the fuel system) although with it being so damn cold lately I have been putting off getting gas till the last second now.......too damn cold to be sitting outside pumping gas!!!

Poor Economy = Normal
The FS-DE has always rendered comparatively poor fuel economy, in my opinion because it's a primitive, outdated design that should have been replaced years ago; not last year. Mazda either doesn't really care to make efficiency a priority, or they simply can't compete with the likes of Toyota and Honda in terms of their technology; probably a combination of both.
That's not to say that Mazda is the worst out of all manufacturers-- Indeed they're still better than many. But compared to the leading Japanese auto makers they ARE the worst. They're just not as good in engine design-- Even with their newest MZR 2.3. Case in point being: The 2.3 engine in the Mazda6 and Mazda3 STILL delivers worse fuel economy than the larger Honda 4-cylinder in the Accord. Frankly, that has always pissed me off.
But at least Mazda engines are reliable! In that much they've matched the likes of Toyota and Honda, I believe...

A higher octane won't get you better gas mileage. Anyone who tells you will with at Protege 2.0 L really doesn't know what they are talking about.
For me:
City: 400-475 km depending on how hard I drive.
Highway: As high as 650 km if I stay under 120 km/hr.
I don't notice a difference in winter versus summer mileage. (I have good winter tires, and avoid spinning on every intersection)
The best way to get your mileage is to fill the tank to the max...drive till almost empty....filler it up again to max...now you have the exact volume of gas and the odometer will tell you the mileage.
Oh yeah. Check your manual for how much gas you have left when the light comes one...it's right there in print.
