Fastest MS Protege?
Hi all, it's been a LONG time.
Anyway, there si a discussion going on right now on a local board about the MS. What's the fastest 1/4 time anyone has ran in a modded MS? Also, how much boost can the internals handle, assuming the car has an aftermarket FMIC and other goodies? Thanks!!

The internals can take a good bit of abuse with PROPER tuning. I'm not sure I can speak for everyone but the fastest MSP I've seen was running low 13's on the stock turbo. He was running 22psi and used only a FCD, MBC, and custom exhaust. He owns a dyno and measured 283hp the crank. It came out to about 265whp. With a different turbo/intercooler set up 12's are very possible, however you're missing the point of this car. It's not a drag racer. The suspension is not set up for it. The chasis would have to be re-worked to make it into a more capable drag racer. However, a "slightly" modded MSP will hold it's own against the best in the world on a slalom. I believe it's best kill was a porsche 911 turbo. The MSP will out-slalom it and several other high dollar sports cars.

Oh no no no. Believe me, I'm not missing the point of this car at all. In fact, I said exactly what you just wrote. It's was never meant to be a top fuel dragster, I know that. In fact, here's what I wrote:
The problem is that the people replying are saying that they aren't fast at all, and that they blow up at 10psi. I'm just trying to get some info on them, cause I really don't know what they can handle power-wise. Thanks!
"Well, if a 15.1 in the 1/4 isn't "remotely" fast, fine.
I wanted a MS Pro SO FRIGGIN BAD last year. But, I needed a car before it came out, so the rest is history. What get's me about them is how fast people are ready to say they suck. I'm willing to bet that not one single person on this board, other than me, has driven one. If I could trade my car, straight up as it is right now (with the countless $$ I've thrown in it) I would.
That car was never designed to be a top fuel dragster. Considering it has N/A internals, is limited to 6.9 psi, and has a tiny IC, I think low 15 are pretty damn good. A MS Pro would show it's tails to anything short of a 300+ hp sports car on the track. That car handles rediculously well.
Scoobie, I'm not bashing you in particular here. I'm just sick of seeing Mazda get trashed all the time because their cars don't win 1/4 mile races. People whine that the RX-8 costs "$30K, and only runs a 14.5". Or that an Altima is faster than a 6s. And the Miata sucks because it's "slow". Other than the 8, I've driven all these cars, and they are phenominal machines. I've driven more than a few RX-7 TTs. I thought they were the best handling/balanced cars I've ever driven. Supposedly, the 8 handles even better. Oh yeah, I fit in the back seat of an 8 better than I do in my own GTI.
I saw that yellow MS at Brown when they had it. I almost nutted my pants. They changed the colors, spoilers, and valences between 2003 and 2003.5 (the yellow is a 2003.5). It sucks that, in Toledo at least, there is only one dealer. Because of that, there will never be a fair amount of Mazdas on the roads up here. It's a shame that more people don't get a chance to check them out. IMO, they are the best Japanese cars in the US."

Truth be told....my MSP blew up at 14psi, but only because the head gasket blew and caused the motor to hydro-lock. They are just as capable of being fast cars as the eclipses are. They are just base four banger motors with a small turbo thrown on them,

It is widely believed that the stock internals will not hold past 14-15 psi....since there hasnt been much testing on the MSP yet there is no hard evidence, however it is true though the internals and bottom end of this engine are strong compared to other 4 bangers, but weak compared to other Mazda 4 cylinders like the BP,B6,and F2...without getting forged, running more than 10-12 psi is begging for a cracked piston or broken connecting rod(the real weak point of this engine) I'm really not trying to disagree with Roddimus all the time, but the FS-DE is NOT as capable of handling boost as a 2nd Gen Eclipse, however to agree with him the MS was not designed to be a drag car..IT was a response to reviews of the MP3 saying it was begging for 30-40 more horsepower to be a truely perfect driver to car interface FWD car, and that it is....If there are any MSP's left on my dealers lot come february and they are still offering $2000+ rebates on them i just might get one myself

I know several people running 15psi on their daily driver MSP's. I also know 2 people running in excess of 20psi for race days. The stock internals are fine if the motor is tuned properly. Enjoy, the MSP is a great car, but I like my P5 more.

whoa my last post number was 666 !!! those people running 15psi as daily drivers tho, seriously, dont expect that engine to last long, and say goodbye to that 50,000 mile warranty....If you want to run high boost on these engines you really should at least get forged connecting rods and pistons...it isnt as costly as one would think....why are people so intent on boosting the hell out of and engine and not doing the groundwork first breaking the head open and replacing those parts will cost a lot less than a new engine

I love my MSP 3.5 but not for what they charged me for it , anyway I do think it could have a better boost ! It has a quick take off but lags in the long run ! Maybe thats do to the rich fuel rate that they have it site up @ ! I do hope when I hook up an RD 6060 injen cold air intake this will take care of that !

The Eclipse's suffer the same problem as with any turbo car does: Fuel. Ive seen Eclipses boost 20+ psi daily... but to take caution the owner added a stronger in-tank fuel pump and changed the headgasket.
I can see 18+ psi on a MSP daily, with 2 things: Stack another headgasket to lower compression just a bit, and an in-line or in-tank fuel pump. Most turbo systems fail because of fuel... the rest fail because of too much boost.

Does anybody know what the fastest custom turbo 2.0L protege is?
Also, does anybody have a comparison of the MSP engine internals vs. the stock 2.0L ?
Basically, I'm just wondering how I can properly tune this 2.0 with a custom turbo and still keep it a daily driver for 100k miles or so.

The only REAL problem with eclipses (2gs) as well as the MSPs is the turbo. T25 is a poor excuse for a turbo.. they cant even hold boost through the full rpm range on our small 2.0ltrs. Atleast at the stock 12psi the eclipses are set at.

the MSP has no different internals than a stock 2.0L Pro...it just has a different ECU controlling fuel...that is the only advantage of the MSP turbo system vs an aftermarket turbo...usually though the aftermarket has a much bigger intercooler than the dinky one mazda borrowed from the european turbo-diesel...
