As for overkill? I really don't think so...not considering its true intended purpose....the last line of defence for ships against a missle of any kind....we had 4 units on the aircraft carrier I was on....we installed them while I was on it...and got to witness all the testing at sea on the firing range....you just can't imagine. After that sucker STOPS firing...there is so much brass out there it seemed like fifteen seconds before it all hit the ground.
and I guess you could say till the target disappeared....ours were set to keep firing till NO TARGET was larger than one square foot in surface area.
