No, since both the MP3 and the MSP (Mazdaspeed Protege) were 5-speed manuals this will NOT work!!

No not really, because it's just reflashing to another OEM Mazda program. For the 3rd Gen Proteges, you can go to the advanced timing MP3 map (requires premium fuel) for a nice smoothing out of the power band, but for the 2.0 Mazda3 there is no special Mazda model so you're kinda out of luck.

I have mad respect for the 2.0 Mazda3 motor though.. crazy, ridiculous gas mileage and only.. like 8hp less than the 2.3?

I don't know--it seems Mazda's 2.0 is finally getting to where it should be. 74hp/liter is about right for a DOHC 16V redlined at 6500rpm--Honda's been there for decades. Our Protege's stock 65hp/liter is unacceptably poor--even for y2k technology. [/bitching]

By the time I replace the P5 Mazda's engine technology will be 10 years old again. I'm out of phase with their cycle!

It's just the engine code for the 2.0 in the 3rd gen Proteges (also in the ford probe, mazda 626, mazda mx-6)

so, would there be any reflash that would work with my 2002 ES, auto? If the mp3 was a 5 speed, I don't think my 4spd auto would be able to use it's ecu.

Is that right?

So, what can be done for us 4spd auto guys when it comes to ECU?

Can it be tuned or flashed to something better, or is it pretty much good the way it is?

There's no other Mazda flash that would improve things. Mazda doesn't do performance models with automatics.

good excuse to convert to a "real man" manual transmission, eh?
