Flashing brake lights legal in US?

Howdy all!
I saw a Cadillac that had a rapidly flashing brake light rather than a constant, steady one, and it looked nice actually. I see JCWhitney sells some LED replacements for brake lights that flash. However is this legal? How much can you modify your brake lights, etc...I see some trucks that practically cover theirs with pastic covers, etc.
Just curious. Thanks!
Josh

Check your local traffic laws...I'm willing to bet they are not legal.

in some states it REQUIRED that the headlight on motorcycles MODULATES....

so the morons driving cages will see them better.

Well, in this case, it was the only one in PA that I've seen like that... and the guy was wearing such an extreme biker outfit, and he was signaling thumbs up to all the other bikers around, and you could just tell he was some rich ***** who was the biggest biker wannabe I've seen in my entire life... look at me, I'm a biker!!!. And he was riding like on of the lower range Honda Shadows... it was barely a real bike. And the we're not talking headlight... we're talking tailight. And modulating is one thing... flashing for a while, then moving around in circles, then exploding like fireworks is a totally different thing.

my father is fleet manager for a beer company in CA USA. He used to have all of his vehicles set up with flashing brake lights
They would flash for about 5 times and then go solid. Kinda got our attention. He hasn't pu those on any new vehicle purchases so I don't know if its now illegal.

i think the idea is good to alert the driving behind to begin braking.... but it gets really irritating in stop go traffic cause it causes continuous flashing... saw it on a Benz once but the setup was quite clever, only the brake light on the rear windshield would flash and the others on the back were normal...
