Thumbs up Future of Protege...

Well yesterday I learned some info about the new upcoming 2002 Protege Mp3. I met a guy at my work yesterday who actually works at the Mazda Design Center in Irvine, CA. He helped to design features for the 2001 Mp3. He told me about the turbo that they tested and may be placed in the 2002 Mp3. They ran the turbo at 4 psi boost and they dyno's it at 180hp to the wheels. Then they doubled it to 8psi and got 220hp to the wheels. Now I don't really know anything about turbo's, but are those numbers possible, or was he blowing smoke up my ***? If it's true, then maybe he is right about that turbo getting put in the 2002 Protege Mp3 at a safe 4psi. Just thought I'd share...

Depends really on the turbo for that amount of gain. 4psi is pretty low. And there has been lots of talk about next years mp3 having 180hp and it whistles.

They better put that **** in the P5 or that would be wack if it was limited production.

Later, Rishie

That's possible, but lie Jeff said, it depends on the size of the turbo. Although, compression is low on our cars, so 8 psi should be great for our cars. Only problem is finding out the integrity of the FS's bottom end. I doubt it's like a BP whose bottom ends take up to 20psi all day. Gotta love the BP.

If they are going to run a higher compression FS engine...such as the FSZE in the new Proteges then setting the boost at 4psi would yield around 180hp @ the wheels...not to mention staying well within the "safe" parameters of turbocharging that engine. If they are going with a lower compression FS, like our FSDE then...8psi seems about right also for the projected HP output....chances are the turbo itself will be TINY...probably much like the one on the WRX...but hey....I aint complaining.

I like the new smiley...but what to use it for?? Hmmmmmm....

Hahaha, I was thinking of that too, maybe we should restrict its use to the 'suspension' forum, ya know, when your shocks are bad, or somebody gets hydraulics in their pro.............

About the turbo......... I'd strongly consider trading in my Protege as much as I love it for a turbo version, just hope they don't make it too limited.......

I hope that Mazda will make it some sort of a bolt-on upgrade turbo system that you can buy through dealers (yeah probably more expenseive, but keeps warranty and stuff...) or MazdaSpeed usa or whatever.
That would be sweet.
Not sure I want to go through the hassle of trading in and getting another car just to have turbo (especially since everyone keeps saying the P5 won't be changed until 2003 year with the brand new platform shared with the Focus).

Turbo MP3...

The turbo Protege that is supposed to be coming along isn't going to be an "MP3" car like the original MP3...

It will be called something else...

And I'm not just trying to protect the limited status of the MP3, I'm trying to get the right info out there...

I just talked to Mazda NA today and they said there will be another MP3 but it will be released in 2003 not 2002.
