gauges

Well, I don't know the Protege per-say, I'm an RX-7 guy. But turbo's are turbo's ... basically all you have to do is T off the line that goes from the wastegate to the intake manifold. That will give you a boost reading. Then if you have a mechanical gauge, you need to run a vacuum line all the way into the passenger compartment (pain), or get a more expensive and more accurate electronic gauge. Then all you have to do is run one wire to the interior.
I'd personally say get a Defi gauge if you can afford it. Then when you add more gauges in the future, you can also use the Defi Link and get data-logging on your gauges. Very cool feature!

I'm not an autometer gauge fan at all ... they're typically cheap and inaccurate.
A boost gauge isn't going to give you any power increase. Before you start thinking about getting more power, you need to set a budget. How much do you have to spend? Maybe then we can give you some ideas.
