Great Milage going to Bar-Harbor, ME this weekend....
Went up to Bar Harbor this weekend with my girl friend and got some great gas milage in my Protege 5. I turned 10,000 miles on my car the way up and went 764 miles on 22.5 gallons (33.96 MPG). That was about half the trip on the highway and the other half on route 1 (costal route), averaging between 40-85 MPH.
What was the best milage your guys/gals have gotten out of your 3'rd generation protege. This was with two people in my car and a light load of gear and has been my best so far.
Here is a pic of myself and my car on sargent road on great desert island. I guess this road has been used for many car commercials. My g/f would not let me drive as fast as I wanted to down it. Maybe next time.

That's really good mileage.
I've reached a high of 31mpg for a whole tank, once. Driving from Berkeley to Pasadena ~400 miles. The car only had 2000 miles on it at the time. The drive was non-stop, cruise was set at 73mph, and it was 3am. I was the only person in the car too.
My city mileage is pretty consistent at around 27-28 mpg.
I think TheMAN get around 35-36 with some J-Spec parts and synthetic fluids.

I have all factory fluids in my car. I have gotten around 30 MPG a couple times going 80 MPH with a full load in the car. With the trip last weekend, i had the AC on the way up and could have driven a little easier when accelerating from stops. I bet I have could have had 2 mpg better if I had done that.
I an thinking about using synthetic fluids, which should get a little better.
You getting 27-29 MPG in the city is very good. I get low 20's when driving around an urban area. I like using the throttle and the upper end of the rev band.
It is hot up here in MA today and is going to be like this all week. Will be using the AC more now, which does not hurt the milage as much as I thought it would. We will see......

Not bad at all. I bought a P5 on Friday and got 32.4MPG on the dealer gas (supposedly a full tank). I was babying it pretty well on pair of 260 mile round trips over the weekend. The average speed was probably between 60 and 65 and it was just the wife and I with limited to no cargo. I could have coaxed a lot better mileage out of the thing if there hadn't been 10 miles of stop and go because of construction and I had allowed myself to use the cruise. Varying the rpms (while keeping them low) and load conditions does a better jobs seasoning a new engine. By all accounts this is much less necessary these days, but I want the car to last a few years, so.....
I look forward to seeing how well it can do on my next trip when I can drive it for real.
