I read side by side test of 5 popular wagons-Matriz, Focus, PT Cruiser and Pro. They had top gear acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h or something like that and Protege was 2 seconds faster than 180 hp Matrix. You loose and you gain-what would you rather have?
I have intake whine and muffler rumble, I cannot hear engine at all

You guys have probaly been driving automatics way too long. Most automatic transmissions will dip to lower RPM's on the highway, because the second u let off the gas, the Torque Converter kicks in, and will reduce ur RPM's. Standard cars, do not have torque converters, and thus, the rpms will not drop very much when u let off the gas. It's more ideal to keep the RPM's constant, than fluxuating, Its not hard on the engine at all, as long as u change oil at proper intervals. Plus, have u ever noticed that an automatic, on the hwy, once u press the gas again, its sluggish at responding, and it takes like a second or two to bump the speed up again, before it pulls u. while a standard, since ur speed is already there, u just hit the gas more, and u will take off much faster.
Good point...does this mean you get worse gas milage in a standard on the highway as opposed to an automatic?

no. manual tranny's are more efficient than auto's.

As far as I'm concerned higher revs are better because it means better throttle response. I usually keep the 5 in a gear to keep my revs 3000-4000 so I know I can just step on it and go.

I normally keep my Pro at the same spot...closer to 3500 - 4000...I shift no lower than 5000RPM....unless its snowing....thats another story....stupid snow

but I can come close to redline alot under normal driving

whaaat...you need a role-model!

Here comes my rant...
Basically no car is perfect...A Diablo isn't a family car...the Hummer only seats four (the Pro seats 5 in a pinch!) If you need seating don't buy a Diablo or a Hummer.

When I was shopping for a car I found that especially in the small car market, you are buying a bunch on compromises.
1. The Civics handling is no where near the Protege!
2. How about a Focus, the base motor is junk, the Zetec is louder than the Protege at near redline runs.
3. I'll try the Corolla...Untill this years re-style, looked about as interesting as a 90's Taurus
4. The Echo...Thanx but I'd rather catch an STD!
5. Cadavier/Sunflower (GM) I've never heard so much noise, felt so much vibration while doing an 18-sec. quater-mile!
6. Then there is a Kia (this is basically old design Mazda...if you don't like the Pro, you won't like the Sephia)
7. Lastly there is the Neon...nuff said!

So basically I can find fault with any car...The thing is you have to pick the one that delivers the most of what you want. Noise...thats what the stereo is for, so turn it up!

P.S. the Protege was one of the first on the market in it's class to offer a standard CD player.

Hmm, I did a 4 hour trip last weekend (2 hours each way) and I kept my revs between 4k and 5k all the time, my average speed was 160km/h and I had the A/C on. If I was being too hard on the engine, shouldn't the temp have gone up?

BTW, I have a 1.6l

The Protege is a great car, my budy who has a 99 Civic Sir, let me drive his car today.

Before he let me drive it, I noticed that he usualy has his engine RPM at arround 4000. I was like: shift already..he's like no no, I like it like this.

Then when I drove his car, I knew why, the car only starts to make power just under 4000 rpm. And don't enyone wory a bout gas milage, he doesn't get anything better out of his 1.6 liter.

Past 4000 RPM, his engine is beautyful, lots of power.

My point is that every car has diffrent caracteristics, it doesn't make it bad, just different.

I would like to make a suggestion, maybe get a brainstorming session going here...

I remember looking under the hood of a 95 Jetta diesel and there was some sort of noise insulation blanket right under the hood. It looked like a 3/4 inch thick insulation blanket that was screwed under the hood. The car salesmen it was there for noise reduction, especially for the diesel cars.

Now I'm sure there are a bunch or creative minds out there, can anyone think of something they could do to create the same thing for the Protege?

I'm open to all ideas!!
