Mazda dealers must be more generous in Canada. I'm sure they'd make you pay around here.

I'll take this opportunity to pimp my unused EGR again.

God I feel like such a dumbass... however, you never ask, you'll never know right?

What is an EGR? What makes it so hard to get out?

It's below the throttle body.

EGR stands for exhaust gas recirculation .. it's mainly there for emissions as it "recycles" some of your exhaust. If you look at your exhaust manifold you'll notice a thin tube that goes from the exhaust manifold to the bottom of the intake manifold. That's the EGR pipe, and the intake mani has a valve that allows a certain amount of exhaust back in for combustion. However, the valves weren't designed very well and get gunked up very easily due to the amount of carbon in the exhaust gas, so when they get clogged up we get sporating idling and such.

Yea yea .. I know. There are two things I go to that forum for.

1) Sell & Buy used parts
2) Check out How-To's

This board is much better for discussion, but they have a crazy amount of info and detailed how-to's over there. Plus there's about 50x more traffic so the marketplace is a lot busier too. Until I write up my own EGR how-to the evil forum will have to do.

A how-to for any maintenance task I can write up from memory, but I'm not gonna go take my whole car apart to take pics for the how-tos :P

Thanks for the referral to the other board.. has anyone seen a how-to for the EGR on the 1999-2000 1.8-liter?

I haven't actually heard someone say "hells yeah it's the same" but since it's the same block/head and just different engine internals I'd like to say the EGR cleaning process shouldn't be any different.

Yea, that's what I wanna say too. I mean it's not the EXACT same engine, but pretty damn close. Should be located in the same spot and the same steps should be taken to remove/clean it. I can't confirm anything though cuz I've never actually seen a 1.8L Protege in person.

It's the same, trust me, I've seen em both, the 2.0 and the 1.8 are twins in the intake mani area.

They use the same EGR, and same intake mani, so the process is the same as well.
