looking for a new exhaust...

have you thought about having a local exhaust custom bend you one? Thats the route I'd take. Choose your own muffler/tip...you can get cheaper crush bent piping if you wanna step up to 3" piping...or just mandrel bend some 2.25" or 2.5"

well i dont think i wanna go any bigger than 2.25" in piping, cuz i dont really have any turbo plans, and i think a bigger piping will give me less of HP gain... how much do you think it would cost to get a muffler shop to bend that piping and install the tip for me?

the reason I suggested going with 3" is if you crush bend you wont get a true 3" inside diameter. If you can get everything mandrel bent then you should stay with 2.25"
I had my 67 Mustang GT crush bent (3") with dual 40 series flowmasters and 4" tips installed for $250. That was for duals. sounded awesome and unless you're under the car no'one will know you went the cheap route.

The fOCUS was even less than that (no tips) Flowmasters & dumps behind the rear axle. I'd suggest finding a good muffler shop and getting a quote.

If you're still undecided, I have the SR Motorsports 2.25" mandrel-bent catback exhaust. It used to sit in my 2000 Protegé ES (1.8L engine), for about 1 year. It fit perfectly; installation was a breeze.

SR charges quite a bit. I could give you a much better price. If you're interested, I will provide pics.

Make sure you get a GOOD muffler shop. My brother tried to get a custom exhaust for his truck and got screwed by the shop that did it. They used crushed when he asked for mandrel and ended up making one of the most twisted exausts i've ever seen.

It's on eBay currently. This is the second time I listed it. Was going to offer it here, but it looks like there is already a (low) bid on it. If you're interested in looking, it's listed as "High Performance Catback Exhaust 2.25" for Protege".

I really liked the Borla i picked up, but now a days its hard to come by because its discontinued, but there are still some shops that have a few in supply,
But be ready for the high cost. if i didnt score my free, i wouldnt have paid, we ordered two for myself and a bud with the same car, he ordered his, paid 500$ US , but when i ordered it, appparnetly the authorization went on my credit card but it didnt post a transaction. i remember the day exactly it was like Dec 8th , when the Canadian dollar hit its all time 13yr high. lol
anyways make a long story short,
Borla does have a distinct sound that if your ever heard a borla , you will fall in love with.
Performance wise , you will definatlly feel thedifference, couple that with a INTAKE upgrade and your flying.

I don't have the car any longer, so I can't help you with that picture.
However, look at: http://www.srmotorsports.com/ProtegeExhaust.JPG
Top picture:
SR exhaust on left, installed in car. Stock muffler & tip on the right.
Middle picture:
Shows protrusion of exhaust tip. The design of the tip is very similar to stock. Nothing fancy.
Bottom picture:
SR muffler. You can see that it fits into the stock position, and is similar in size. It is not a shiny, polished finish, like you might find on a Magnaflow muffler (for example). Again, this is similar to the stock exhaust.
Overall, the steel surface of both components (midpipe w/resonator & muffler), has an unpolished steel color. If you look at the welds and seams, you will note that they are not coated with anything. Again, nothing fancy.
If you are concerned with installation, the placement is exactly as stock. The SR muffler has hangers identical to stock. The midpipe is held in place by the muffler (two bolts), and the cat pipe. The angles of the bends allow proper mating between the flanges. You will not have any issues with clearance, etc. The fit is quite secure. I took my car to the track a number of times and never shook anything loose. If your bolts are rusty, stripped, or otherwise in bad shape, you should get new bolts before you install the SR system. Otherwise, you should be ok.
Here are pics of my car in action:

and the exhaust didn't hurt the laptimes either :
