Looking at a used Protege sedan
Its a 2000 ES, white (yuk), 5-speed, moonroof with over 75,000 miles. How much would be a reasonable offer for it?
I understand that the 2001 ES (of which the dealer has 1 or 2) has a bigger 2.0L engine, is worth the extra money?
I really only need a cheap reliable and fun little car with 4 doors to supplement my 2002 Miata LS for carrying around the wife and kid so I can't afford a new one. Thanks in advance for any replies and advice!

Ill throw some numbers at you to maybe help you out.
I just bought my 2000 ES for $7250 from a private owner.
I consider this an excellent deal, as the trade in value is around that much.
dealer retail is around 10K, and private party value at around $8600.
If I was you, I would go to edmunds.com and get your prices there.
KBB and NADA are overpriced. Edmunds id more realistic as to what the car is actually worth.

Thanks for all the imput so far
Edmunds hits it at about $5,800 trade-in and $8,643 retail. Kbb was (of ocurse) a bit lower on the trade-in side and way higher on the retail side.
I have an old 1990 CRX I'd like to trade in that I have not had much luck selling on my own. The CRX is a bit rough on the outside with a couple of dents. The interior is in great shape (but noone seems to care).
I was thinking of offering $6,000 and then trying to get about $1000 for my CRX for a net of $5,000 to finance (about $150/mo. for 3 years). Does this sound resonable or will I get laughed off the showroom?
Thanks again.

Thats the key, decide what you will pay , tell the dealer that, and dont negotiate. Well start lower and work your way up to what your figure is, but if they dont want to deal, just walk away.
I dont think they will go for the deal above. Maybe, but a 1990 CRX is pretty worthless to them, so if they give you a grand for it on paper, they are going to try to get you to pay more for the Mazda. thats how they work, more for trade, more for the car your buying. Give your trade away, and pay less on the car you want to buy.
Your better off keeping the honda and just getting a fair price on the Mazda.
Always negotiate separately also. Get your best price on the mazda, and then tell them about the trade. See what they give you for it then. Dont tell them about the trade up front and then let them play the numbers game with you.
