Question Low Gas Light...

just wondering if anyone knows exactly when the "low gas" light comes on? mine came on today and then i filled up a little later and the tank only took 45 Litres (~11gallons) but the tank takes 55L...does that mean it comes on with about 10L left (~2.5gallons)...if so, that's a very advanced warning notice...

and i got about 500km (~310miles) on my very first tank, is that good?

when I drove my car off the lot I didn't put another drop of gas in it till the light came on...did this on purpose so I would KNOW how much was left when I got the warning light....it was 2 gallons left...so I would say its in the ballpark as fairly standard.

My low fuel light comes on when there's about five litres (1.3 gallons) left. How much you think is left in there when the light comes on is going to depend on how much you squeeze in when you fill up, obviously. I can put in another 5-6 litres after the pump shuts off the first time, so if yours is the same and you're not doing that then that would make it seem as though the low fuel light was coming on early.

I just filled mine and the light was on. I put in about 47 litres and the ODO read 562 kms. Right now my P5 has about 11800 km on it. Sounds about right I would think.

hard to tell by figuring what you put back in. Like bmorton said depends on what you call filled. I routinely drive to and back from work with the light on, 48mi. I prefer one station.... 5L (1.3gal) seems on the low side as I've never ran out. Anybody that has run out notice the mileage accumilated with the light on?

From what I have read, it is a really BAD thing to run out of gas in our P5s. I believe it has to do with keeping the fuel pump lubricated, so no gas, no lubrication, problems . Probably why they give you lots of gas when the light comes on.

I thought that only happened in Volvos (and maybe some other European cars) because they have a secondary fuel pump in the gas tank. Is that true in P5s as well? If so, that would be good to know.

Yea, I'll go along with driving w/ low fuel accelerates pump wear. I actually think it's more of a heat issue, no fuel surrounding it to keep it cool. I did the same with my VW (drove w/ light on) and needed to replace the pump after 6years & 130,000mi. To me it's worth it as I'm really not interested in spending more than once a week @ the gas station. nice even $15 fills it to the brim every time.

the first couple times the light came on, about 12 gallons went into my tank when i got it filled up.

The most recent time, the light came on and 14.7 (yes, more than the 14.5 gallon capacity listed for the P5) went in. i don't know if the pump was messed up or what, but i wouldn't be too sure that the light comes on with 2 gallons all the time. it may be much less.

My 1st full tank got 330 mi before I had to fill it up. The low gas light was on for just a few mi. I'd say your close enough...

I wouldn't trust waiting for the light. When I fill up its seems that the needle goes up past full and I can drive forever before the gauge says my first 1/4 tank is gone.
