ATTENTION ALL MAZDA OWNERS DOES ANYONE HAVE A PICTURE OF THIS CAR??? AS SEEN AT THE NY AUTO SHOW???
Mazda had the most creative press event of the New York show, using a high-energy, New York-style runway fashion show to showcase its new MAZDASPEED brand, apparel, car accessories and first MAZDASPEED vehicle.
Due late in calendar 2002, the 2003 MAZDASPEED Protege comes with 170-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder capable of 155 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm, and 450-watt Kenwood MP3 audio system. Just 2,000 will be for sale. It will be the first time MAZDASPEED will be on a street-legal Mazda sold in North America. The name has been in use in Japan since the late 1960s.
Thanks
And by the way......... remember this IS a Protege site am I correct??? If I cared about Mitsupicashits and WRXXX's I would've bought one so lets get back on track here please...

I read the article too that had MP3 outperforming the Corvette Z06 and a Ferrari (forgot which one) in the slalom test. Not by a lot, but still that's impressive. It came in #1 as far as I remember in the test that put it up against the Neon R/T and the Spec V among others

Well, luckily I have the 10 car test from Road & Track still in the bathroom - it's the November 2001 issue.
In this issue, R&T tested 10 "hot" cars under $25,000. Of course, there was not a direct shootout between the MP3 and a Corvette or Ferrari.
But to quote R&T from this issue: "Mazda's new Mp3 is currently the best sports-car bargain in America." - and - "The MP3 threads through the cones at an incredible 68.5 mph - besting such tarmac titians as the Chevy Corvette Z06 (67.1) and the high-dollar Ferrari 360 Spider (66.6)." It also registered the highest skidpad numbers in the test (tying the Mustang GT)- .84g.
The other cars compared were:
Acura RSX Type-S: 66.8 mph / .82g
Chevy Camaro Z28: 65.1 mph / .81g
Dodge Neon R/T: 62.4 mph / .79g
Ford Mustang GT: 64 mph / .84g
Mitsubishi Eclipse GT: 63 mph / .74g
Nissan Altima 3.5 SE: 63.3 mph / .80g
Subaru WRX: 62.3 mph / .76g
Toyota Celica GT-S: 63.6 mph / .79g
VW GTI GLX: 64.8 mph / .78g
The MP3 was dead last in acceleration, but beat the doors off of all the other cars in the handling department. Most notable was the slow slalom/low skidpad g of the WRX.
I belive that R&T uses a 600 ft slalom course.
"Hard to believe" or not - the numbers aren't lying.

From Autoweek:
Porsche 911 Turbo - .93g
Corvette Z06 - .95g
Impreza WRX - .83g
Sentra SE - .83g
Sentra SE-R Spec V - .88g
Miata - .86g
MR2 - .88g
So as far is this goes I guess it just depends on the magazines and their methods. I'll go with Autoweek and their compliments of the handling of the MP3 in their short summary. Autoweek, again, never tested the MP3 or the current generation Protege beyond a test drive. Maybe someone can do a lot of research and find out how both of these magazines are doing their research.
EazilyAmuzed, I made a screen saver (search the forums) and you can get pictures from Mazda directly.

No. I agree that it does not. But numbers don't lie (well maybe bad numbers do). I actually have the Miata review in front of me. It edged the SE-R with a 46.5MPH in the slalom versus 46MPH. It was slower in 0-60 and the quarter mile though. It does not say whether theirs has the LSD and 6-speed or not. But the Miata has not had its suspension modified yet and the SE-R has (heavily) so I think that the numbers are pretty fair. With an upgraded suspension the Miata should stomp it.
