Redfrye, can I get you to scan me a copy of your receipt where they flashed your ECU? My dealership swears up and down that there is nothing for the P5 except rusty rotors. I've looked on the TSB website and this is accurate. If you have some sort of receipt showing exactly what they did I'd like to show it to my dealership.

gotta throw it!!!!.....variable valve timing ??? I hope you arent serious with this claim.....There is NO variable valve timing system on a FS-DE 2.0L engine, which is what your P5 is equipped with...look in the FAQ, mazda, wherever you want...the only VVT systems that masda has equipped on any Protege were J spec models and I dont see anything in your sig about an engine swap, plus local dealers just dont deal with J-spec parts...the Mazda 3's 2.0L doesnt even have VVT only the 2.3L...so what exactly are you talking about????????????????????????

I'm not really sure who you're talking to Macdaddy. I don't recall anyone saying anything about VVT....oh wait, someone said it adjusted the VVT?? I think they meant VICS. That also should have nothing to do with running problems....only adjusts the intake runner length for topend power. I think the concern we have now is with ecu flashes that the dealerships are doing or not doing. I know that when I had my MSP they denied the falsh until they were blue in the face. Then I showed them the actual repair number and they said that was only for cars experiencing problems and my cars symptoms were that of a normal turbo car. Nothing out of the ordinary and didn't require any work. I'm just trying to see now what ecu upgardes they made to the 02-03 P5's.

"They put the new code in for the variable valve timing.
There are other owners on this site and other Protege
sites that have the same reprogramming done. In fact,
the TSB for that was somewhere on this board...".....that is Red Tyres quote....and he said Variable Valve Timing more than once...there is no fix for the VICS noise, its mechanical, not electronic, so no ECU flash would fix it.....do a search and look at some of THE MAN's quotes...very knowledeable former member....

You know for being a moderator Roddimus, you're not very knowledgable on Protege's or Mazda's in general..In fact you're also kind of a jerk the way you respond....I dont think you'll get a fax from him, cuz it sounds to me like he's full of it...there is no TSB on a flash for a P5 ECU, nor is there a fix for the VICS noise...again that noise is a mechanical issue, not electronic so no flash would fix it...I think I understand why everyone is starting to migrate to clubprotege...the only thing this club seems to have going for it is all the old info from the old Mods that knew a lot

wow, that was about as un-called-for as it gets. Personally. I knew there was no VVT on the 2.0 motor. I also doubted the ecu fix on the P5. That is why I asked for a fax of the repair order. (still havent gotten it). I am not so full of myself however that I think I know everything. That is why I didn't condemn him. If he has proof of an ECU fix for his P5, I'll let him show it. I also didn't say there was any fix for the VICS, I was just stating that I thought the confusion came in around the discussion of the "swirl effect". Also, I'm a bit offended in the fact that you think I know nothing about cars or mazdas. I'm an ASE certified technician. I've built more race cars than you've probably owned. Be real careful about throwing around accusations and names.
As for the reason why people are leaving this board: They might be leaving because we're running a cleaner, tighter ship than the other garbage forums. I came to this site to get away from the kiddies and smack-talkers. I'd much rather have good conversation with 3 mature people than 2,000 idiots spamming and cussing. If you don't feel that way then maybe you're on the wrong forum.

Well let me rephrase that...past Moderators, like The MAN, and PseudorealityX, were vastly more knowledgeable on Mazda's than the current mods on this board. If you knew what was going on why did you not ask him to clarify??? People arent leaving this board because of smack talk, seriously. The real protege knowledge is just on the other board...I never said you know nothing about cars, just based on posts i've seen from you it seems like you are lacking in info on Protege's and mazda's.

I won't comment on that anymore. I've done nothing but be informative, helpful, courteous, and friendly. The fact that the 3rd gen protege is my first dealings with the protege shouldn't warrant anyone judging my mechanical knowledge. I bet I know more about turbo-fords than anyone else on this board, but I keep that to myself unless someone asks that question. While I may not be the most informed I also don't claim I am.

I believe this is what I was talking about. Ok, so its not VVT I'm pretty sure I stated I can't remember what it was called. It's just some PCM reprogramming.
As for the fax, I just got your PM reply. I'll send it out tomorrow.
