My Shift Indicator got cracked!

Now, my car is about 8 months old, I don't know for what reason why my shift indicator has several horizontal lines, I suspect it is because of the shift indicator light, since I felt the heat on those cracks.

Can I claim this to my Warranty ?

Actually , I went to the dealer a while ago, then there's a staff there who told me that you might not be able to claim it as a warranty, since I have a sunroof, and having it opened, and letting the heat of the sun crack it is not part of the warranty, it is really very annoying to hear such unreasonable explanation, he even told me that, normally those shift indicator won't crack, since you have the sunshade always open, that will not be claimable as warranty.

On my side, I think mazda is really crazy to be putting such thin piece of plastic to the shift indicator, and having a 1.4 watts bulb under it, while the park lights are turned on, I tried to touch the cracked parts, and the heat really came from the bulb. The most affected parts of the crack is the letters R,N and D. Since the bulb is most near them.

So this just means that the bulb cracked it not the heat of the sun.

did the sunroof come with the car? or is it aftermarket?

doesn't the glass in cars have some sort of UV protection ?!

Mazda should, and will, replace it. If you have problems with the dealer, go to another. If you have problems with that dealer, call Mazda. They will make sure it gets fixed. I have seen ten-year old Miata's with automatic transmissions that don't have cracked gear indicators. And this is San Diego... convertible tops are down practically 24 hours a day!

If it wasn't broken by an impact of some sort, and it sounds like it wasn't since you seem to have multiple cracks, I would fight for it to be replaced by Mazda under warranty. You may have to make an appointmant when one of their regional managers is in town but stick to your guns. It should not crack because of sun or heat, could be from a bad batch of plastic. Good luck.
