Need to add car to insurance before buying?
Hey all,
I'm expecting to purchase a new P5 in the next week or two. Do you know if you have to add the car to your insurance before you buy the car and drive it home? Or is there a grace period with most insurance companies? What did you all do? I use Geico.
Thanks

New Car Insurance
With my insurance company (State Farm) you automatically are covered for 30 day after you get your new car - with the coverages and limits you have on your existing policy.
This could be important if you don't have comprehensive or collision coverage on your existing car. You wouldn't have it on your new baby either - without contacting the agent.
To be on the safe side, I'd contact your insurance company and review your specific policy and coverages. They'd be able to tell you the cost of insuring the new car then too.
By the way, if you wait the 30 days to report the car - in my case - the coverage is dated when you took possession of the car, so you don't get a month's free coverage - you just don't have to rush to get the info to them.
If you finance the car, they will require you to have comprehensive and collision to protect them incase the car gets wrecked or stolen.
Good luck and enjoy your new Protege!

Thanks for your response. I don't currently have collision on my 1991 Civic hatchback, but I'll need it for the P5 since I'll be financing. I'll give Geico a call and get it set up before I take delivery.
I guess those insurance companies aren't _that_ dumb to let us get away with 30 days of free coverage
